Hello! I am a junior in high school. I'm thinking of applying to Carnegie Mellon. What made me consider this school was its reputable writing program. However, I would also like to double major in marketing, and I know that there is a marketing track in Tepper. I have some Bs in math, though. I just barely missed an A in AP Statistics first semester, so I know that will hurt my chances of getting into Tepper (although I got an A 3rd quarter, so I believe I will be looking at an A for the second semester). So, I was thinking of applying to H&SS. If I get into H&SS, once I am at CMU, will I be able to double major in both schools? Please let me know. Thank you for any help!

*On an unrelated note, I prefer writing essays to fiction. How much focus is put on that in the creative writing program? Can you choose different tracks for creative writing?

There shouldn’t be any complications there. As for your specific question, I’ll leave that to completelykate to answer, because I have no idea.

Could you clarify what you mean by ‘writing essays?’ Do you mean personal narrative essays (like Montaigne or David Sedaris) or more clinical essays - persuasive arguments, treatises, that kind of thing?

If the former, I would recommend a creative writing track. Hilary Masters offers two nonfiction personal essay workshops. I’m taking the advanced one now, and it’s an essay writer’s dream. (I prefer fiction, but I enjoy Hilary’s teaching style, so… s’all good.)

If the latter - I think professional writing or rhetoric is more what you’re looking for, not a degree in creative writing. That’s not really creative writing - it falls more into the ‘argument’ spectrum. HSS also offers a professional writing degree, so you can take courses in both majors while pursuing professional writing (which is more rhetoric/argument based).
