Tepper and H&SS

Are those two colleges good at CMU? or is CMU mainly for computer science and such?
How do they stand with other schools?

Tepper ranks pretty high. I believe its undergrad business program is ranked top 10 by US News & WR and its graduate MBA program is ranked top 20 with some areas like quantitative analysis ranked top 5.

As far as I know, 4 Nobel prize winners in economics have also been professors at Tepper (or its predecessor, GSIA): Herb Simon (deceased), Robert Lucas Jr (now at the University of Chicago), Franco Modigliani (deceased), and Finn Kydland (who is still a faculty member at CMU). Other prominent economists associated with the school include Allan Meltzer and Ben McCallum. Tepper is very selective though. Last year, its freshman acceptance rate was less than 14 % (the lowest of all CMU colleges).

H&SS on the other hand is not a particularly high ranked college, but has a few decent departments. In particular, the departments of Psychology, Philosophy and Statistics are ranked top 10 and are among the top in the country in terms of faculty research productivity according to the Chronicle of Higher Education. I believe the Department of History, although not top ranked like the aforementioned ones, is also reasonably good.

Other areas where CMU is strong and ranks highly nationally and internationally are obviously computer science and robotics (# 1 in the US, tied with MIT or ahead); all areas of engineering (especially computer/electrical and civil/environmental, but also strong in mechanical engineering); architecture, music, and drama; public policy (at the graduate level, i.e. the Heinz School); and applied mathematics (especially logic). Right now, the university is pouring a lot of money in biological sciences and biomedical engineering and it is anticipated those might become strong areas also in the future.
