I was wondering whether anyone knows how difficult/easy it is to get an on campus job at Yale (I'm an international, so I can only work on campus). Is there huge competition for specific jobs? I was also wondering whether there are any jobs which might offer more shifts during the spring and fall breaks, as I'll probably be staying on campus...

Student employment pays well: $11.15/ hour minimum! Some pay more. Always more jobs than students so it’s a labor friendly market. Some jobs probably face more competition. As for breaks, it depends on the hiring department.

If you want a job, Yale will certainly have one for you. Next year’s minimum wage is a nice $11.75. A number of jobs allow you to work on breaks, although it would be best to ask about the ability to do so when your interviewed or hired.

What kind of jobs are available, and how many hours does a student typically work?

There’s a pretty broad range: Library assistant, mail room clerk, help desk attendee, lab worker, museum docent, food services worker (pays the best), etc. It’s up to the student. Some work 5 hrs, some work 17-20 hrs/week.

Here is the job posting site:

When a student’s aid package includes a job, does the FinAid office help the student match a workable job/schedule, or do students go through the job board/postings separately?

The students do it themselves. Because of the lg. supply of jobs, it doesn’t make sense for the FINAID office to direct the students. It allows flexibility for the students, too. Not everyone is going to go for the big bucks working at the dining hall.
