Test Help for Prospective Transfer Student

Hello, everyone! I applied to Rice last year, but I got wait-listed and didn't get in. I want to reapply this year, but I don't know whether or not I should retake some tests. I was hoping other transfer students or anyone with experience could help me out.

I made a 1970 on my SAT (1340/1600), which isn't the best, but I've already decided I'm not going to retake that. However, I did quite dismally on my SAT IIs... 640 in History and 590 Math II. I had a bad day that day and I know that if I retake them I will easily make 700+. My question is... Do you think it would be beneficial for me to take the ACTs again? My composite score was 28 and if I retake it I might be able to get a 30+. However, the deadline for the transfer app is 3/15/11 and the latest ACT test is 2/12/11--seems like I would be cutting it a tad close.

Thanks for your opinion and good luck to other applicants!

If you think you can “easily” do well as you say you can retaking the SAT IIs, by all means go for it. Higher scores work only in your favor for both the SATs and ACT, but be wary of vesting too much effort in those scores. All those test scores are really only used to predict your success in college in general, and they tend not to do a very good job of that in the first place. First and foremost in transfer admissions comes your current grades and GPA, since they would more accurately predict your success at Rice.

You’ve got plenty of time to take your tests if that’s what you choose to do. Good luck!

as xFo… says, if you are confident that you can do well, then retake it. Better stats will always help you.
