Hey! I applied to UCLA (and a bunch of other UCs) already, but I was wondering how much test scores matter. I have a good GPA and got ELC, but my test score is on the “lower” side…
I have a little higher than a 4.77 UC GPA uncapped, but I got a 31 on my ACT (literally the science section killed me lol). My extracurriculars aren’t extraordinary, but they’re solid. I think my essays are good and I tried not to make them basic! How much does UCLA care about test scores?
Also, another negative: I’m Asian!
I know I’ve already submitted the application, but it’s stressing me out so badly. I really want to go to UCB or UCLA, but I feel like this test score is going to hold me back (and maybe my ECs since I haven’t done anything outstanding).
Here is the ACT 25th-75th percentile range for UCLA.
25th - 75th percentiles for ACT: UCLA: 30-34
So you are within range. Intended major will play a part in your chances.
Here is what UCLA looks for in the application review:
- Los Angeles
- Very important: Academic GPA, Application essay, Rigor of secondary school record, Standardized test scores
- Important: Character/personal qualities, Extracurricular activities, Talent/ability, Volunteer work, Work experience
- Considered: First generation college student, Geographical residence
- Note: GPA, test scores, course work, number of and performance in honors and AP courses most important. Essay considered. Strong senior program important. Extracurricular activities, honors and awards also reviewed.
UC’s tend to be very GPA focused so your GPA will help your chances.
I though UCs are capping GPA allowing no more than 8 honors/AP semesters. if that’s right, the max GPA is about 4.6, right?
@collegefind1234: All UC’s quote the capped weighted UC GPA (8 semesters Honors/AP) but UCLA/UCB are the only UC’s that state they use the fully weighted so unlimited semesters of HonorsAP courses.
The Capped Weighted max GPA is 4.4. Fully weighted theoretically could be as high as 5.0.
@Gumbymom - thank you for clarifying… I used to feel good about my 4.35 GPA, but not anymore :-/
@collegefind1234: Your GPA of 4.35 is competitive. Admissions is not all about GPA.
Asian ethnicity is not a negative to UC, as evidenced by the 40+% asian at UCLA and Cal.
UC’s do not consider race/ethnicity in their admissions decisons.
I don’t believe being white or Asian is a negative to UC admissions, I just think UC is trying very hard to say yes to more URM kids who may not have had the same access to tutoring and test prep. Holistic admissions are improving diversity, making UCI, UCSB, and UCSD much more attractive options for everyone IMHO.
