So I already took the SAT and got a nice score, so I thought I was done. Then I had to take the ACT as part of my state's exams, and when I talked to my counselor, they actually put these scores on our transcripts! Unbelievable. I studied and whatever and thought I did fine, but how do colleges consider scores that are put on transcripts? It really is unfair that some high schools would deliberately do this and hurt their own students' abilities to be competitive in admissions.

Obviously, if I get a 36 on the ACT I just took I'll be happy I took it. But if it's not good enough, how badly will it hurt me, if at all?

Ask them to remove the ACT information. It is not theirs to give. I did the same for my transcripts.

Is it different if it’s part of the state exam, and thus taken with the school? I asked if I could do that as well and they said they couldn’t. However, my counselor is pretty bent on not going out of her way to help students.

My school also puts all test scores as part of the transcript, so all SAT and ACT and HSA (state standardized testing) scores. I know we have an option to send just the grades or send both the grades and the test scores. See if they’ll let you do that.

If they don’t, it should be fine, still. I got a 2120 and a 34, which is a decent discrepancy. Colleges see both scores, but most colleges have a highest-score policy, anyways. They’ll probably completely disregard the ACT if it’s not with writing (assuming you’re aiming for top colleges).

I’ve seen is that many colleges will consider what’s on the transcript to be equal to an actual score report, as most colleges notate by SAT despite my not sending it anywhere (so you might be able to save some $).

I just emailed ACT about it. I’ll wait until the score comes back to talk to my counselor about this if the score is too low. But my counselor is so pedantic and answers every request with “we aren’t allowed to do that.” If the ACT gives me a favorable response she might take them off though. Thanks guys.

curious to how your situation turned out? Having same problem.
