Anyone know if there is a policy that allows you to test out ot Eng101 based on ACT scores? I've found the SAT verbal score needed to test out, but can't find anything on the ACT Reading and English scores that are needed. I only took the ACT.

Thanks :)

just out of curiosity (and because I can’t simply wait until orientation next week to find out), what’s the SAT score required to test out?

I also only took the ACT and at orientation they told me that the don’t have an official comparable ACT score to 670, so we have to take ENGL101. They all acknowledged that it was annoying and unfair, but we still have to do it. Definitely frustrating!!!

They dont accept ACT scores to test out of English 101…You need a 670 on SAT…

Also, doesn’t a 4 or higher in AP Lang or AP Lit allow a student to get credit for English 101?

Mitziespal, it could be a blessing in disguise that you can’t test out of it though…because if you take ENGL101 and get an A, you don’t have to take Junior English! (which everyone has to take otherwise). So if you get out of ENGL101, you’re going to have to take English then Junior Year anyway…I missed the ENGL101 exemption cutoff by 10 SAT points and was originally disappointed, but now I’m happy about that after getting an A my first semester and getting out of Jr. English later on. And then you get to take an upper elective that you’re really interested in in its place.

Not sure if that is true for all majors. As a engineering major I have to take English 393 (technical writing) regardless of whether or not I take English 101

^I believe Engineering is the only exception to that. I remember hearing about that but just for engineering.

This probably goes for every school. I took technical writing at my uni too along with 5 other courses that are related to liberal arts

Hi LucyLou- this off topic of your post but I saw that you initially accepted your offer at Penn State and were planning to enroll in the Discover House SLO. What changed your mind? Did you not get the housing that you wanted? I’m curious because I’m interested in Discover House too- but wasn’t sure how hard it was to get in.

Thanks for the info everyone. I attended orientation Mon and Tues and like mitziespal, I was not able to get the exemption from ENGL101. It sure does seem a bit unfair I had a 35 Hopefully I will get the A and then the exemption from Junior English.

pamom59: I actually changed my mind very soon after I initially accepted at Penn State. Nothing at all to do with Discover House…that looked like a great SLO with lots to offer undecided freshmen. I changed my mind because I received a President’s scholarship award from UMD and it was just too good to turn down. I have never looked back…very grateful for the scholarship I received and so excited to be a Terp :)
