DS 2022 is likely NMF based on PSAT score (224) and ACT (35). Set on Aerospace or Mechanical Engineering. Was excited about a few Florida schools but not as much now that the Benacquisto for Out of State student seems in question.
Is interested in Texas A&M. Trying to dig through past posts to see what the NMF package could mean. Does anyone have experience with that?
Other strong schools with solid NMF packages to consider?
You may also want to consider Mississippi State. The have a great NMF scholly. They have great ME and Aero Programs. My son is do aero there. The aero has concentrations in either 1) Aeronautics - with Earth’s atmosphere 2) Astronautic - beyond Earth’s atmosphere. My son was 2021 finalist and a corporate scholar. There is also opportunity for department scholly. My son picked up an additional $2K /yr from department. You actually will have an opportunity to get paid to go to school
My kid got it, basically OOS waiver, and a huge discount on remaining tuition (~-80%) and a bit of money for study abroad. It’s worth around $42,000 + the OOS waiver. Engineering is A&M’s strength, but hard to get into. Also, your major in Engineering is not guaranteed. A&M is a great school with a great network (I’m an Aggie)
Kid decided on UTD though. Which is a full ride.

The NMF package from the Barrett Honors College at Arizona State University (ASU) is pretty strong (full tuition for out-of-state students)
ASU Engineering Programs are ranked in the top 50 by US News, and Barrett Honors is rated 5/5 by John Willingham in his book Inside Honors 2020-2021: Ratings and Reviews of 40 Public University Honors Programs

Texas A&M NMF: https://scholarships.tamu.edu/Scholarship-Programs/National-Scholars#0-NationalMeritScholars
However, note that Texas A&M admits to general engineering, with a competitive secondary admission to specific majors later for those who do not have the automatic admission college GPA (currently 3.5, rumored will be raised): Entry to a Major Process | Texas A&M University Engineering . There is little information on how competitive each specific engineering major is.
My D had this scholarship at A&M(graduated 2016). At that time it was worth about 1/2 of COA. She got enough additional merit money to have a full ride. From what I understand, we were unusually lucky in this. She majored in Chem though, not engineering. She is getting her PhD now at Stanford. The only risk with the scholarship was the high GPA requirement of 3.5. D kept a 4.0 though, so it turned out OK.
Another thing to consider about Texas A&M, NMFs are often selected to interview for the Brown Scholarship, which provides additional room and board funding and great internship opportunities. Certainly not guaranteed, but worth checking out. My S22 likely NMF may be applying to A&M in large part because of this scholarship.
