Texas A&M University - College Station vs. Georgia Institute Of Technology

Hey,

I've been accepted to the University Of Pittsburgh so I figured I would apply to a better engineering school. My parents would like me to apply to Georgia Tech because it is the 4th best engineering school. Personally, I would not even consider going there because I would like a good social life during college. However, I would consider going to Texas A&M. Do I apply to a school that I would consider going to or somewhere just for the reputation?

Thanks,
Pierre

bump…

College Station isn’t exactly the most cosmopolitan area, and someone from Mass. may experience a bit (or a lot) of culture shock. I have an aunt & uncle that live nearby and all their kids went to TAMU… it is definitely a very conservative, traditional atmosphere. While Ga Tech isn’t exactly known for isn’t parties, you do have Atlanta and its resources at your doorstep. And no matter where you go, engineers aren’t going to have much of a social life (let’s face it).

If you would not consider going to GaTech, then you should not apply. Although Atlanta is a great city, GaTech is certainly among the top five not only in reputation but also on the demands that it places on its engineering students. GT is great for people who enjoy engineering much more than play time.

If I were you I would be more inclined to apply to Penn State (the advantages of A&M without the Aggie jokes) or Virginia Tech. A&M kids generally are very happy with the school and the alumni network is unequaled. However, it is not a beautiful setting and it would be a culture shock for a Yankee.
