Can anyone tell me about the Texas Grant. I know the basics, but I read the funds are limited and to get your FAFSA in asap after January 1, 2011 to up your chance of getting a piece of the pie. Can anyone tell me how late in the game they turned in their FAFSAA and still received the grant? Not even sure we will qualify yet, but it will be close with two in college and some dependents at home. FINGERS CROSSED

Also can grants be used toward room and board or just tuition?? We have never qualified for one so I have no experience there!!!

The TEXAS Grant is a big question mark this year. Submit the FAFSA (and college application) as soon as possible. You can use estimates to initially submit the FAFSA with an early date and then go back and submit corrections later. In the past, most eligible students who were admitted to their university and submitted the FAFSA by March 1 received the grant. Grants may be applied to the entire Cost of Attendance, not just to tuition and fees.

Due to the budget crunch, the TX Legislature will make huge cuts to education funding. The Education Commissioner sent a letter to universities warning them not to award any state-based financial aid until after the state budget is set, which may be as late as July. It is very possible that the Texas Grant will be discontinued, at least for new recipients.

Contact your state reps and encourage them to protect education/financial aid funding!
