So the site is pretty cool and I got 2 of my text books in .pdf form. Now my question is, since I've never been to college, do professors check to see if you bought the book or do they use it in class? In that case would it be ok if I shamelessly open up the files on my laptop when the professor asks us to use our books? Also is this a good idea overall or am I better off buying books at lower prices?

i never brought my book to class, and the professor never asked to see my book.

no one would care if you opened the pdf on your laptop... in fact, i think they'd be jealous if anything.

i suppose in some subjects (humanities), professors might read a passage from the book and expect students to follow along. but if the book is on your laptop, as you said... i don't see what the problem is.

as for whether or not it is a good idea... just ask yourself.
1. can you read and study for periods of time while staring at a computer screen, or do you prefer staring at a book instead? (book seems better for your eyes, not sure)
2. you can write notes in books.
3. pdf is lighter.
4. you might get distracted 'studying' on your computer that has internet access.
5. pdf is cheaper.

if you have a large free printing allowance, you could just print out the book.
