I would like to buy used textbooks online at various places, but how does one do that the first quarter of their freshman year at Rose?

My daughter didn’t know her fall classes in advance so buying used books ahead of time wasn’t really an option for that quarter. We’ve been able to take advantage of them for later quarters.

Enrolling in classes five days before school starts will be an expensive penalty to pay as far as purchasing used books online. I am used to knowing two months before school starts what textbooks to purchase for my private high school. I will spend less than $100 when some people who buy them from our bookstore are charged close to $1,000.

Our local public universities have orientation throughout the summer where students can enroll in classes in June and July. This allows them to get their books ahead of time at a lower cost. It takes time to purchase “good” used textbooks.

If you’re really concerned about it, you can gauge most of what your first quarter classes are just based off of what the curriculum is. You know what math class you will be in based off of how much math credit you come in with, and you can pretty much know the rest of your schedule based off of what major you want and their suggested curriculum. Most are listed [here. You can then find the required textbook(s) for the course here. You won’t know which professor you will have, but for core classes they should all be using the same textbooks.

If you end up taking a humanities or elective class you won’t know what you have until you get scheduled, but for your science and math classes they should be predictable - and those classes have the expensive textbooks anyway. Regardless, I’m hesitant to buy books for humanities classes in advance…until you talk to other students, it’s hard to tell whether you actually need them or not.

EDIT: One other option: once you get a .edu account, Amazon.com will give you an amazon prime account for free for one year. (link](<a href=“404 | Rose-Hulman”>404 | Rose-Hulman)) There’s free two-day shipping on most amazon items (unfortunately, used items are hit-and-miss for free shipping), so you can save some money by going that way as well.

One other consideration is that once you get to Rose, you might end up not wanting to buy all of your textbooks. The bookstore has textbook rentals for many books, or if your roommate turns out to be your same major you can just split the books.

gobeavs - thanks for continuing to support those future Rose students who are apprehensive about their choice. You are a great spokesman for Rose.
