Thank you notes for letters of recommendation

I am currently applying to grad schools, and I have three professors that wrote for me. I was fortunate enough that none of them minded writing to all three of my choice schools.

I am planning to send a thank you note to them, but I am wondering what is the best timing to do so?

If I sent them now, they would arrive roughly around the last school deadline (Jan. 15) and would be me thanking them for their time through the application process, and telling them I would keep them posted when I got my decisions back.

If I waited until the last week of March/first week of April, I would be able to thank them for their time through the process AND give them an update of where I got accepted to.

I know these professors well from quite small studio sizes so I think it might be nice to be able to tell them where I'm going, esp. since two of them are alumni of two separate schools I applied to. I am not a professor, but if I were I might find the second option nicer because it would end on a more definitive success?

Am I wrong on this? What are your thoughts?

I’d write the thank you letters now, then shoot them all a quick email when you find out where you’re going.

Agree with Massmomm.

Thanks for the suggestion. I’ll go with that.
