Thank you notes

How soon after the interview does one send thank you notes? Is it ok to wait a week or two after the interview? Is it acceptable to send thank you notes via email? If coaches etc email after the interview is it ok to wait a week or two to respond, and can I thank them for their time in that response or do I need to send a separate thank you note via snail mail to them?

I know there are people who will argue that we’re in a digital age and email thank you notes are fine. I strongly disagree. I would encourage you to send a handwritten note to the AO and communicate with coaches via email.

You don’t need fancy monogrammed stationery- just simple ecru or white notepaper. Perhaps you can choose a fun stamp to place on the envelope. The important thing is to write it and send it soon after the interview and not wait a week or two!

IMO it is best to send a handwritten thank you note to an AO, preferably within a few days of the interview. If a week or two has gone by already, it is better late than never, but this is general guidance for the future or others who are reading this post. Student tour guides can be sent a quick note via email, as well as any faculty members who have communicated via email. We (parents) sent an email to the AO.

We’re in the email category. An email from the student applicant, and a separate one from parents. I am not an AO, but in my work I prefer to receive email thank you’s etc., because it is much easier for me to respond and because it is less wasteful. All interviewers we thanked via email responded promptly, sometimes with surprisingly detailed and enthusiastic comments. Maybe they would have taken the time to look up our email addresses, or send a hand written note, in response to handwritten thank yous, I don’t know. I know for myself that when pressed for time, I am less likely to follow through if doing so requires an extra step. But this is an individual thing. I am sure there are plenty of people who prefer to receive hand written notes. You cannot please 'em all. Timeliness is important, but late is better than never.
