thank you notes....

i had an interview recently. i received the person's card with their email and mail address on it. i planned on just emailing a thank you note, but my mom seems to think that is completely impersonal/lazy and the interviewer will just ignore it or something. she suggests i write a card and send it through the mail. while this might be nicer, i don't feel safe sending a card like that through the mail, especially to a college office full of mail. i feel it could get lost and i would never know. i like the fact that with email the interviewer would receive it immediately (immediacy is good for many reasons). i also think sending emails is becoming more accepted. what should i do? ty

You're concerned about the same college office that has gotten your recc letters, application, etc. losing a thank-you note? Sure, it could happen, but I agree with your mom. Send a thoughtful handwritten thank-you note, which would stand out far more than would an e-mail message.

you make a good point. however, i have actually experienced a lot of trouble with missing documents so far. nevertheless, ill write it. ty

Nothing prevents you from sending a short thank-you e-mail followed by a longer handwritten one.

Hand-written!
