Thankful that Amherst can continue need blind admission

The Shrinking World of Need-Blind Admissions

College of the Holy Cross says it can no longer afford to admit students without regard to financial need. Meanwhile, discount rates nationally hit record highs.

That’s why when they have the giving campaigns, it is important to give no matter how little. Last month two generous donors made matching gifts. Can I just tell you the sweetest thing, though? Someone here on CC made a donation in my daughter’s name! I will forever remember that kindness.

But interesting to see that this school year when both schools populations were made up of students under a need blind policy, that Holy Cross actually awarded aid to a higher % of students- 62% for Holy Cross vs 56% for Amherst.
Amherst’s endowment is much bigger which is a big reason why a school can be need blind, especially when it has a relatively small student population. And Holy Cross will still maintain being need blind for a very, very high percentage of applicants.
