Hi, I am a freshman in high school and I want to know if the summer after I've complete 9th grade, if I can take a course at a community college. There is a form that my counselor needs to sign to be able to attend these colleges concurrently with high school, and if I'm not sure, the counselor will say that I don't need to, therefore not signing it, or that it's against school policy, which it is not. The college I'm specifically interested at this point is MiraCosta College. Does anyone know if you can take classes at these kinds of colleges RIGHT after the completion of 9th grade? Thanks. :)

You should be able to but you won’t get priority at the college so gl getting into a class…

I took classes at my local state college (Edison State College in Florida) WHILE I was in 9th grade, through the Dual Enrollment program (I’m assuming this is what you’re talking about). I am a senior now, and they have changed the rules so that you must be a junior or senior to take college and high school classes concurrently. I really hope you get to do it! It is the best experience of my life! I am so prepared now for when I transfer to University of Florida in August of 2012! I will graduate high school with my Associate’s degree as well! If you have any other questions, feel free to ask me. :)

As for mysweetwawa’s response, it is not true that you “won’t get priority at the college.” You have just as good of a chance as getting into the college classes as the actual college students do! I have been doing this for a few years now, so trust me. :)

Thanks to those who replied. I have one more question. What is the college course equivalent of a high school chemistry class? There’s CHEM 108, 110 102, but I can’t tell which one is actually the same as chemistry in high school. Thanks!

mnyawn, i guess it depends on the college
but I live in california, and the schools have no money lol
so college students who pay tuition are given priority over high school students who do not

Is this the form? It answers some of your questions.
