Thanksgiving break 2010

I would like to make plane reservations for my son to come home for Thanksgiving break as I noticed they are already getting quite expensive. The tentative Fall 2010 academic schedule for 2010 indicates Thanksgiving break begins after their last class on Nov. 24th which is the day before Thanksgiving. Do most students actually wait until after their last class on the Wednesday before Thanksgiving or do they actually leave on Tuesday or even early Wed. & miss classes that day?

oh wow.
this is really early to consider that but i guess it’s earlier the better

From what I can tell, most people wait until after their classes are over, but there are still a good number of people that do leave early. Also, depending on the class, the prof might decide to cancel class Wednesday afternoon - this past year, both of my Wed. afternoon classes were canceled for the week of Thanksgiving. However, if you have something like physics lab or chem lab (though I don’t actually think there are any Wednesday frosh chem labs), it would not be a good idea to skip out on that. It really depends on which classes your son ends up having on Wednesday, so it may be safer to just book a later flight.

I left on Tuesday, because I was going to visit my friend at Stanford where they have the entire week off. I think it’s okay to leave on Tuesday, missing one day’s classes is not very much.

I think that the last two years, my son’s Wednesday classes were cancelled. But I don’t think either of those were labs. But, depending on where you are, it is a short break. It has not made sense for him to fly to the East Coast for such a trip. It is really bleak to fly on that Wednesday and Sunday We have ended up going out there. But – there are no other kids involved and we have good friends in LA. It has just worked out that it was better for us to the do the traveling than him. Might not work for many people. Lots of Mudders just hang around campus.

Our son has stayed on campus through fall and spring breaks and Thanksgiving as well.He rather sleep and hang out with friends than face traveling back home ( 1 hour flight…).

For those who remain on campus, Eastgiving is a pretty big deal – a potluck-style Thanksgiving feast hosted by East dorm. I think my son thought coming home for Thanksgiving was worth the drive last year, but I suspect we’ll lose him to sleep, friends, and Eastgiving at some point.

threefifthsc: for what it’s worth, I had wednesday chem lab my freshman year (although that was 4 years ago now); I’d be surprised if they didn’t still have wednesday chem lab sections. I can’t for the life of me remember if it was canceled or not though. There’s no big deal with missing a day of classes, unless lab is one of them, since it’s much harder to miss lab. It’s not the end of the world, but I’d advise against missing labs if possible.

Whenever I left, though, I left after classes on Wednesday.

I stand corrected. I knew there was one day a week that they didn’t have chem lab sections, but that’s Tuesday, not Wednesday. There’s also a new frosh physics lab that does have sections on Wednesday. So there’s a possibility for having either chem lab or physics lab on Wednesday (though you’d only be taking one of the two…I think. New core = confusing for the rest of us).
