I just realized IU gives a week off for Thanksgiving. Do the dorms close for that entire week? I really did not want to fly home considering semester ends within a month.

Yes the dorms close for Thanksgiving Break. They have break housing where you would live (most likely) in a different dorm lounge for the break for a cost.

The dorms do close for Thanksgiving, and it’s likely you’ll be looking for a break to fly home at that point. I’m assuming you won’t be leaving and flying back to California prior to this point…trust me, you’ll be ready for a break. Book your flights by August at the latest and fly Southwest. You’ll want the break before finals.

And keep in mind that the dorms don’t reopen until 8 a.m. the Sunday morning after Thanksgiving, so choose your flight accordingly. The GO shuttle does run extra trips to and from the Indianapolis airport at the beginning and end of breaks.

I cant believe the dorms dont open until Sunday morning. The most expensive flights are on Sunday. Does anyone know if you have to stay in breaking housing the entire break? Could I fly in early and just stay there for a couple of days? It is really expensive to fly to California twice in less than one month

Last fall I was told keys for the lodging over break would be distributed on Saturday morning at ten a.m. and that students must be there in person with ID’s. I think the lodging is basically a lounge that several students share. So you wouldn’t have to stay the whole time, but your flight out has to take into account picking up the keys. I was trying to be wise and leave some adding in the schedule in case of bad weather so I reserved a flight for our daughter that came in late Saturday night. By the time we realized the problem with the timing of the dorm re-opening, it would have cost a few hundred dollars to change flights. Ended up reserving the cheapest room at the Biddle hotel on campus for those few hours. D didn’t feel she knew anyone off campus well enough by that point to ask if they could pick her up from the shuttle that late at night and let her crash for a few hours. The Summerhouse Inn does have relatively inexpensive clean rooms, which might help you over that housing gap.

musicohana…thanks for the advice. When I go to orientation in June I will get more details.
Any chance you are from Hawaii?
