I lived off-campus and stayed (foreigner with family living aboard). I remember it was pretty quiet in Evanston thursday/friday. I think most people went home but quite a few came back Saturday (instead of Sunday night) just so they could get the best of both worlds. A lot of students were from the midwest; cutting the trip short wasn't a big deal since the flight/drive was so short. There were also a few who decided to stay the very last minute when they (more likely the overparanoid premeds) felt they seriously needed the time to catch up.

Most profs do not cancel classes on the Wednesday before Thanksgiving, however many students take their chances by skipping class that day to go home early. The problem is that the Wednesday before Thanksgiving is the last day of instruction before reading week and finals week, and many professors give exams that week. Some don't mind if students miss class to go home, others expect everyone to be there.

As for going home for the break, most students do go home even though they will be going home for winter break 2 weeks later. Last year, however, that Wednesday was also the first snow of the season, so it was VERY difficult for many people to get home, so the memory may have scared a few from attempting the same journey this year.

thanks...after we left move in day last week I realized I should have asked some of the older students about this because flights needed to be booked now in order to get a lower fare...it didn't dawn on me how close finals were to Thanksgiving...

how long does it take to get to Midway via taxi?

Never did that before from Evanston. I did ride a taxi from Lakeview (in uptown Chicago; closer to midway) to Midway last month and it took 40 mins and costed me around 30 dollars. It was a waste of money because we hit heavy traffic on the freeway and I would have gotten to the airport probably a bit faster had I took the train.

I'm not exactly sure how long it takes to get to Midway from Evanston in a cab, but I figure it's got to take at least 45 minutes in no traffic whatsoever. Cabs from Evanston to Midway run about $40 a trip (plus tip). I've taken the El from Midway to Evanston and that took about 2 hours. There's no real good way to get there - most people try to fly out of O'Hare, but many have no other choice than Midway.

2 hours seem to be longer than normal. I just tried the "trip plannar" on CTA site and it said it'd take about 1 hr and 6 min between Howard and Midway. So I'd say it should take about an hour and a half on a normal day. But if the train is late or whatever, it can take longer of course.

It'll be a lot faster if one catches Evanston Express but it runs only 5:25a-09:20a and 2:55p-6:25p (I just got it off the web; check updated schedule in Nov to confirm).
