Well, I am trying to improve my ACT Science score. So, I have read on here that one should only read the fighting scientists passage and just go to the questions on the rest. However, does this really work on the experimental sections? Idk..I have exhausted all my old ACTs and am just trying to refine my strategy. Has anyone tried reading the experiments passage and found it helpful and time efficient?

I usually do a light reading over every passage in order to look for trends and trends only. After you find the trend, you can pretty much answer every question.

I haven’t tried the method you listed, but it sounds like I spend more time than you reading and I usually finish in time.

Personally, I think not reading on every passage (except for the fighting scientist) is a lot easier to do than just to read a lot…almost every question (probably 9/10) makes you look at the graph/picture given and wants to interprets it… There’s no point in reading the “blurbs” unless you can’t find the answer in the middle of the charts/graphs.

Ya, the just reading the questions and then going to the graphs seems to be the unofficial strategy here on CC. However, at least in the red book, weren’t there quite a few questions, at least on the experimental section, that required you to read the passages? If this is true, is that uncharacteristic of most ACTs.

I have taken three practice Science tests, and unlike English, Math, and Reading my score has stayed about the same. 25 on the Red Book. 23, 25 on PR (anyone else think the scale for science in this book is a little harsh? -5 = 29)

The major problem I have is the time limitations. Even if I skip the Conflicting Viewpoints passage, I barely can finish. I usually skip the introduction and go straight to the questions. Am I supposed to read the experiments, most times I end up reading them to answer questions.

I am trying to get a 29-31 overall, but science is holding me back. (E 31, M 29, R 30, S 25 is the best I have gotten on each section, which barely is a 29.)

I got a 34 on the science section the first time and a 28 when i took it the second time. I did not study for my first ACT and studied ridiculously for the second one. And I am horrible at science in school other than bio.

I, too, hate the science section! I took the ACT in April and got a 29 on science, which is well below my composite score and my english, math, and reading scores. I don’t think it truly tests scientific ability…it just makes everybody angry! The time limit is the problem. If we weren’t expected to complete the section unreasonably fast, people would score much higher. I wasn’t able to finish the science section and I hope I’ll be able to finish it when I take the June ACT, but I doubt it. I’m going to do some science practice tests and try some of the different strategies that people have suggested, and I’ll let you know how that goes. Good luck!
