"That’s Why I Chose Yale" to premier on youtube

oranage: what did you find embarrassing? Just curious

Amazing…Now I’m really psyched for Bulldog Day.

I thought it was cute and I thought the campus looked amazing. But I didn’t get a sense of what makes Yale unique. Aside from the college system, everything else are things that most other schools of that caliber readily provide. No dearth of a capella at the other Ivies…

This video is creative, witty, and well executed. But so much of what it highlights leaves me with only one answer to why he chose Yale: because it’s well endowed.

A lot of these posts discuss how wonderfully normal and unstuffy the students look, but how about the facilities? Not so normal at all.

That was my impression as well. It was certainly cute and I can see how alums / current students would really dig it.

This video seems to be producing a “you love it or you hate it” response, even among the commenters at YDN:

What it’s done for me is make me question my long-held view that Yale and Harvard are far more similar than different. As a Harvard alum, I’d be mortified if Harvard put out an admissions video as awkward and amateurish as this. As a Yale alum, I think it’s sort of campy and cute.

Haha check out this… they even talk about CC!

“the board dedicated to the video on CollegeConfidential.com, the chosen playground for insecure, psychotic prospective students, is buzzing with posts that have nothing but praise for the endeavor”

the chosen playground for insecure, psychotic prospectives… haha that made me laugh :D

“the board dedicated to the video on CollegeConfidential.com, the chosen playground for insecure, psychotic prospective students, is buzzing with posts that have nothing but praise for the endeavor”

I object in the strongest terms!

It should read “…the chosen playground for insecure, psychotic prospective students, and their hovering, neurotic, hyper-involved parents suffering from separation anxiety…”

The video was fantastic. The acting and lyrics were intentionally cheesy at points, which I thought made it better, rather than worse, and the singing was amazing.

WOW.

10char

I loved that video. I’ve watched it about 5 times.
Yes, it’s a bit campy, but it provides some useful information. Plus, any school that has a student body that excited about their school, has the student talent and resources to produce a vid of that quality, and has a campus as beautiful and vibrant as the one seen in the vid seems like a pretty awesome place to go to college.

Of course it showcases a lot of Yale’s beauty – but I can guarantee you they did no outdoor filming in February! LOL

It’s pretty drab at that time of the year!!!

^Agreed! Well…the buildings are still pretty! :]

The video was obviously meant to be campy, cheesy & fun. And it actually offers some insight into the residential college system. I must confess that when we first visited Yale and took the tour, we had no idea what our tour guide was talking about when she repeatedly mentioned “residential colleges” - and since the tour does not show you the inside of any of the residential colleges, it was even more of a mystery. The video shows a dining hall, courtyard, suite, etc, so it does a good job of letting prospective students see the inside beauty of the colleges. It certainly would have been helpful to us 2 yrs ago when we visited. Also, the love that the students have for Yale comes through loud and clear, as it did for us during our bulldog days visit last April.

The video is good. Though i couldnt stop laughing after i read this comment

“Not since George Bush has anyone or anything made Yale look so bad.”

Yale makes me so happy.

The admissions video made the New Yorker!

[The New Yorker](Irony 101 | The New Yorker)

Why should anybody care that some totally ossified people who graduated in the 1950s are “appalled” by this video? They’d probably be appalled by a lot of new-fangled innovations at Yale, like women. In my opinion, this video represents a pretty typical Yale attitude (mixture of pride and self-mockery) that goes back at least to the 1970s. People who don’t like the video probably also dislike the YPMB and silly names of a cappella groups.

I agree, Hunt. My D was shown in one of the featured performance groups, and some of the filming took place outside her front door, so she talked about this video months before it was released. She thought the whole thing was fun, sincere and truly represents how current students feel about Yale- you said it better than I did. It communicates something true and charming about Yale that wasn’t available before- certainly not from taking the stock tour and info session, or visiting the website. The nod to Glee and HS Musical is a hook for the intended audience, after all, not necessarily alums.

I think they’re just jealous that they missed their chance to let their inner Puck out :p
