Earlier this (last, 2008) year I read that the transfer class for 08 was 3.8-3.9, but the one listed in the brochure is only 3.65... The brochure for 08-09 (listing 07) listed the GPA as 3.7ish.

Any speculation why this drop occurred?

omgz fast food is making us all stoopid!

That's a pretty insignificant drop. Normal fluctuations is my bet. No speculation to offer.

It just seems weird that the entering class of 2008 was lauded for their accomplishments in going up what seems like a slight rise in GPA and SAT scores, yet the transferring class is slightly weaker than the previous year's.

Apples and oranges, maybe, but I've read a bunch of posts claiming the average GPA was 3.8 (especially with the phrase, "They told us at orientation!")

would love to see links to these transfer stats...

Maybe the 3.8 you saw quoted was from the 2008-2009 Freshman Profile-
http://www.usc.edu/admission/undergraduate/private/0910/FreshmanProfile2008v3.pdf

The way it is reported in the brochure:
2008 Transfer admission statistics
Applicants 8,300
Enrolled 1,500
Average transfer GPA 3.65
http://www.usc.edu/admission/undergraduate/private/0910/USC_TransferBk09.pdf
makes it look as though the "Average Transfer GPA" refers to the 1,500 admitted applicants who actually enrolled. The higher GPA you have heard mentioned may have referred to all admitted transfer applicants - including those who chose to enroll elsewhere.

Apparently it was a weird year that got the 3.8 average (post #18 in the Why so many transfers? thread). Combing through successful transfers listed on here, the people who actually reported back seemed to have 3.8+, too, so that's why I was kinda shocked to see the average was lower.

You were shocked that CC people were higher than the average? lol

Only by a few points. Quite a few CC kids reported 3.8-4.0, but at community colleges. The average for their year was a middle 3.7. Last year, the average dropped a full point over 1500 kids and about 64% were from a California community college.

3.65 is an A- average, which is fairly good, but it's just weird to me that in "the record breaking year for applications" the average couldn't at least stay the same.
