The 2018 Wait Begins

And so it begins, the class of 2018 waiting process...

I have posted before and then waited for my DS to finalize his NROTC list which he completed. The No.1 school on his NROTC scholarship form is the University of South Carolina. He has already started his application. He was quite happy to see that he qualifies for the honors program.

Can someone tell me anything about the program?

Are these kids housed in a different dorm? (Not being cute, some schools separate these kids)

Does anybody know anything about the NROTC unit?

Honors is a great program and it has gotten pretty competitive. Take the essay part of application seriously since they are read closely and it is a major determination for the top scholarships.

There is a Honors dorm that most honors freshmen live in. It is fairly new and very nice, centrally located. All suites with some single and double suites, plus gathering spaces and study rooms on each hall. D made some great friends there. Honors gets huge advantage if you want to stay on campus after freshman year…there is space for upper classmen in honors dorm and on the horseshoe (D is a junior and on the horseshoe for second year). Although USC is renovating womens quad and looking at redoing/building new dorms, housing is still tight.

D has loved her honors classes and the friends she has made. It’s a great way to make big school feel smaller.

I’m happy to report that my daughter qualifies for the honors program as well. My son just started as a freshman at USC and she is only a year behind him so it would be great if they could go to the same school but sadly she is considering schools up north more. The essays on the honors application are certainly plentiful so it’s good to hear that they actually read them and are considered in the process since at the end of the day, it’s going to come down to money since all are good for engineering (her intended major).

Good stuff, I’ll discuss the essay with him…

Coleman4 - What schools is your daughter looking at up north. Too funny my DS wants out of the north. I think the 3’ of snow we got in one night put him over the edge. He was not happy when I made him shovel. If she wants New England be prepared!!

/\ 3unitsIlove - that’s exactly what she is looking for- SNOW! We never get it down here and I’m from PA originally so I tried to warn her… it’s not all that. She’s been accepted already to Univ. of Pittsburgh and wants to apply to UMd and possibly UPenn (not sure of that one since it’s binding unless you do reg. decision which reduces your chances a lot from what I understand). USC has a good honors college and the dorm is close to the Engineering bldg so she’s still considering there as well, especially since her brother goes there now!

Hey Coleman 4. My freshman d( the nursing major) was between Pitt and USC… Two totally different schools. I know! She applied early in August last year and Pitt was the first school she was accepted to for nursing. That’s why she had such a hard time deciding about USC since Pitt was direct admit into nursing and USC was not. She basically was down to Pitt and USC and eventually USC s weather won out. We went to admitted nursing student day at Pitt and the engineering students were also there. They did seem to have a great program. I loved Pitt and we know a bunch of students who have gone there and had a great experience. I know they have a good honors program too and they do give nice scholarships! Up until the very last minute I thought my d would pick Pitt ( very good nursing program) so I was suprised when she didnt, but she is loving USC so far! The only frustrating thing for me is Pitt was only 5 to 6 hrs from us and USC is 12 !

43 min’s NJMOM3. Coming from New England USC is 12 hours and 43 min. that’s is an extra coffee stop

Our DS has an “A” plan for the Naval Academy, that’s only 5.5 hours. It is his “C” plan that scares me. University of Alabama and OlMiss. I’m not driving that, he can fly!! I wish he would just apply to our own in-state University, that’s only 45 min’s away.

In the end it’s all good no matter where they go as long as there is good food.

Coleman4 - Your in my boat my crazy kid started with Hawaii because he wanted to see big waves and maybe an active volcano. That thought didn’t last too long.

By the way my son wants to study electrical engineering if they are there together they may meet. Tell your daughter to stay clear of the clever funny kid from New England. Believe me she will know right away who he is. Actually he is a really good kid. He is very protective of his sister.

In regard to snow, we get way too much. The last 5 years have been really bad. You know I did a paper on global dimming about 6 years ago. In my research I found that global warming is not to be true. With the ice caps melting it decreases the salinity in the oceans hence slowing down the warm ocean conveyor belt. Slow that down too much…dun, dun dun…ice age! I read one piece of research that said it could take only 2 to 5 years to slip into a mini ice age. Bigger snow removal equip, more snuggle weather, and more red wine! Yea!!

Cheers…

Okay I had some fun with that thought…

3unitsIlove. /\ wow. The extra 48 minutes would put me over the top! My d would only apply to one in-state school and once she was accepted she had no interest at all. Every other school she was accepted to was within 5 or 6 hours but she wanted to go as far as possible. South Carolina was my limit though, because I told her I had to be able to drive. She has some friends who went to Florida and California though so I guess I’m lucky! After a week of being at USC, she has no complaints so it’s all good!

My DS took the ACT and we have firm information from the college on what his superscore is in regard to the SAT. In math he got what would be equal to a 720 and verbal a 700. With the writing he is sitting at 2050. He wanted to hit 2100 but hey take the 2050 and be happy right. Adding in his GPA and class standing they said he stands a good chance on getting a merit scholarship. Coming from OOS this will help a great deal.

NJMOM3 - That’s interesting re: your d’s options b/t USC and Pitt… We are going to visit my s at USC over Parent Weekend (10/4-6) so my d will have another look at USC then as well. Also we are driving back up to Pitt over Christmas- as I figured she needed a closer look there when the weather is colder. so we will see. She meets honors college reqs for both schools but I suspect (hope) USC will be more generous with OoS scholarships but we will see. I’ve heard that being a female in Engineering up there (Pitt) makes a difference too.

3unitsIlove - As I think someone said previously re: the OoS scholarships, each class competes with the applicants within that class so it varies year to year; however, to give you a general idea, my s has one of those merit scholarships and his SAT was less than what you reported. That would be something if our kids met. She is interested in Biomedical Engineering…

After comparing schedules, NJMOM3 and I came to the conclusion that my s is in some classes with her d but I’m not sure if they actually ‘met’ yet. @ NJMOM3 - My s said that Nursing Evolution class with Dr. Hickey has some older students too - one that is a school nurse and another who is a firefighter. I told him they must be going back to school for an advanced degree and that’s that evening class (Tues. 4-7).

That’s going to be a very strong field in a few years. My DS has his eye on two thoughts via the engineering path. I don’t know how or where he gets his info from but!! He wants to study electrical engineering and then get his law degree and become a patten lawyer. I did do a little esearch myself thinking he was crazy going the lawyer route; however, the patten lawyer road looks like it could be very rewarding.

Coleman 4… D was in that nursing class and she said she remembers seeing at least one guy in there but no they haven’t met yet. She tends to start out on the quiet side but once she is comfortable she’s very outgoing so I’m sure they will meet eventually ! That’s funny that he mentioned the two “older” students because my d mentioned that right away and said that they reminded her of me because I had done my nursing degree a few years after a business degree and was one of the older ones in the class. I told her she better stay on her toes because I guarantee her the “older” ones will be A students! That’s great that your d is looking into engineering… I tried to talk my USC d into that as well but she really wanted healthcare! Your d can’t go wrong with either USC or Pitt but I agree i think that USC is a little more generous with the scholarship amounts. I’m impressed with their honors and wish I would have pushed my d to actually apply. She had the stats to apply but was nervous about it. It looks like an awesome program!

my D got Full tuition scholarship from pitt and invited to apply Chancellor’s scholarship.

Sorry, I posted in the wrong place.
