The Accounting Program: Not As Great As It Seems?

Okay, I am having some major confusion. Let me give you the background information:

So I might be kicked out of SUNY Albany’s accounting program because I was non-matriculated in the spring 2012 semester. I was going through a lot of issues during this time and my grades suffered; now, these grades are dragging my cumulative GPA below Albany’s business school requirement. So I applied to SUNY Plattsburgh and got in.

After reviewing Plattsburgh’s accounting curriculum, it seems A LOT more strenuous than Albany’s… I mean, a lotttt more strenuous. Yet Albany is somehow better?

Here is what I mean:

Accounting courses required by Albany for a bachelor’s degree: Intro to financial acct, Intro to managerial acct, intermediate I, intermediate II, advanced acct, auditing, income tax, and accounting information systems.

Now Plattsburgh: Everything listed above, including: cost accounting, government and nonprofit accounting, international accounting, income tax II, advanced cost accounting, accounting theory and research, advanced auditing… You also need to take an exam at the end of your program and PASS to get your degree; this exam tests all knowledge that you have acquired throughout your undergrad.

So who really has the better program here? What is up with Plattsburgh having wayyyy more accounting courses than Albany? Seems to me that Platts would prepare me way better.

I think it’s more about the quality rather then quantity

You can’t assume that programs in the 4 SUNY Centers are better than those at the 4 year colleges. Instructors at th Centers are there primarily to conduct research or write, get grants, train grad students. Undergrads are often given short shift. SUNY Centers pride themselves in efficiency. Students are pushed through. Instructors at the 4 year colleges are there to teach undergraduates. The publication pressures are lower and more time is spent on teaching college students, something often considered beneath the dignity of some faculty at the Centers. So don’t assume that Albany would trump Plattsburgh.
