The Admissions Themesong for the Class of 2010?

So I'm in a waiting room, and I hear Linda Ronstadt singing "Ive Been Cheated, Been Mitreated, When Will I Be Loved..." and it just clicked. This has to be the theme-music for many of the applicants this year.

Feel free to post your own favorite. List the one that sums up the class of 2010 perfectly in your opinion.

For the reach schools, it's got to be the theme song from Man from La Mancha:

"To dream the impossible dream..."

I really like Marite's suggestion, but for the parents' crowd, I think this indirect connection to one of the illustrious Man of the Mancha may fit the bill.

IF YOU GO AWAY
by Rod McKuen

If you go away
On this summer’s day
Then you might as well
Take the sun away

"What don't you understand about No?"

(Sorry if I mangled that title.)

Well, Xiggi, S was home for spring break and the weather was gorgeous; now he's gone back and it's snowing again. :(

Did you know that Rod McKuen took the song from Jacques Brel: It's "Ne Me Quitte Pas" in French, and it's better.

Epiphany -- are you referring to the country & western song: "What part of no don't you understand?"

Abridged

Truckin - like the doodah man
once told me you got to play your hand
sometime - the cards ain't worth a dime
if you don't lay em down

Sometimes the light's all shining on me
Other times I can barely see
Lately it occurs to me
What a long strange trip it's been

Been thinkin - you got to mellow slow
Takes time - you pick a place to go
and just keep Truckin on

Set up - like a bowling pin
Knocked down - it gets to wearing thin
They just won't let you be

You're sick of hanging around and you'd like to travel
Tired of travel, you want to settle down
I guess they can't revoke your soul for trying
Get out of the door - light out and look all around

Sometimes the light's all shining on me
Other times I can barely see
Lately it occurs to me
what a long strange trip it's been

For the Waitlisted,

"Somewhere a place for us, take my hand and we'll soon be there, some day, somehow.."

from West Side Story.

"Young"
by Kenny Chesney
"Had no excuses for the things that we'd done
We were brave, we were crazy, we were mostly
young"

Totally, lalady. Mangled the title. Heard the C&W song often. Knew the word order didn't sound right:).

TheDad:
Send in the Clowns + You're So Vain: Love those both for the targeted "singers" & audiences

For all those kids who got into their #1 dream school, a favorite of mine by Mary Chapin Carpenter:

I Feel Lucky

Well I woke up this morning stumbled out of my rack
I opened up the paper to the page in the back
It only took a minute for my finger to find
My daily dose of destiny, under my sign
My eyes just about popped out of my head
It said "the stars are stacked against you girl, get back in bed"

I feel lucky, I feel lucky, yeah
No Professor Doom gonna stand in my way
Mmmmm, I feel lucky today

Well I strolled down to the corner, gave my numbers to the clerk
The pot's eleven million so I called in sick to work
I bought a pack of Camels, a burrito and a Barq's
Crossed against the light, made a beeline for the park
The sky began to thunder, wind began to moan
I heard a voice above me saying, "girl, you better get back home"

But I feel lucky, oh oh oh, I feel lucky, yeah
No tropical depression gonna steal my sun away
Mmmmm, I feel lucky today

Now eleven million later, I was sitting at the bar
I'd bought the house a double, and the waitress a new car
Dwight Yoakam's in the corner, trying to catch my eye
Lyle Lovett's right beside me with his hand upon my thigh
The moral of this story, it's simple but it's true
Hey the stars might lie, but the numbers never do

I feel lucky, oh oh oh, I feel lucky, yeah
Hey Dwight, hey Lyle, boys, you don't have to fight
Hot dog, I'm feeling lucky tonight

I feel lucky, brrrrr, I feel lucky, yeah
Think I'll flip a coin, I'm a winner either way
Mmmmmm, I feel lucky today

TheDad,

Slow day at the office?? ;)

For those with great acceptances but who can't see beyond the reach school rejection.

YOU'RE FOOLING YOURSELF
Styx

Why must you be such an angry young man
When your future looks quite bright to me
And how can there be such a sinister plan
That could hide such a lamb
Such a caring young man

And you're fooling yourself
If you don't believe it
You're killing yourself
If you don't believe it

Get up, get up, get back on your feet
You're the one they can't beat
And you know it
Come on, come on let's see what you've got
Just take your best shot and don't blow it, oh

"Another one Bites the Dust"

Remember today with affection and pride,
But real life isn't always a glorious acceptance,
Real life is yours to build, brick by brick, stone by stone,
And to lose it as well, by bad habits or happenstance.

Ellen, not at all (though things are, in fact, slow today):

Simply call up iTunes, run my eye down my library, note the songs which might apply, type into CC. Nothing could be simpler...five minutes, tops.

Depends:

Lonely Teardrops
Shout
It's All in the Game

(Guess I am showing my age.)

But even better:

Don't Think Twice: "Ain't no use to sit and wonder why, Babe."

Could some of you check out my last few messages in the Parents' thread (with its title mispelling-mispeeling?) on HYPS and financial aid? Thanks.

"Don't Give Up On Me" - Solomon Burke -- The song I'd play Lloyd Dobbler- style if I was waitlisted at my top choice

"A Praise Chorus"- JEW, for those who can't make a decision

Are you gonna live your life,
Standing in the back,
Looking around?

Are you gonna waste your time?
Gotta make a move,
Or you'll miss out.

Someone's gonna ask you what it’s all about.
Stick around nostalgia won't let you down.
Someone's gonna ask you what it’s all about.
Whatcha gonna have to say,
For yourself?

"A Better Son, Daughter" - Rilo Kiley --- strikes a chord with high-achievers

And you’ll be better
And you’ll be smarter
And more grown up and a better daughter or son
And a real good friend
And you’ll be awake
You’ll be alert
You’ll be positive though it hurts
And you’ll laugh and embrace all your friends
And you’ll be a real good listener
You’ll be honest
You’ll be brave
You’ll be handsome and you’ll be beautiful
You’ll be happy

Under the Table and Dreaming - Dave Matthews Band (for the waitlistees)

Can’t get My Head Around It - Aimee Mann (for those reeling from the stupor of rejection)

Bouncin’ Round the Room - Phish ( for all those accepted to their first choice)

Angry Chair - Alice in Chains (for all those who are still complaining that they are so much more deserving of a spot than their peers who scored less, did less, had lower GPA's, blah blah blah...

Thank You for the Venom - My Chemical Romance (for Stanford, who has unoffically won the nastiest rejection letter)

And for 2006, a year of adcom weirdness and the year of the male -
Strange Design - Phish
