The Agony of High School Elections

Our school cares little about Student Council; this is the first year since grade 5 that someone has decided to challenge the position of president, since the former stepped down this year. There has always been a long race for Treasurer between the same two people, and a third party always seems to fry the election at the last minute. The VP usually has as many as four challengers selected from eight. The Secretary is the job nobody wants.

I've decided I'll go for it, just for fun.

I just realized that I was trying so hard that I forgot to have fun.

Man, I'm basically just going with the fact that I won't win.

It's still worth a shot though.

No election is finished until all the precincts have reported and tallied the votes. Otherwise it would not be a free election, just an oligarchy.

you should run for a position against who u know u will win =)

Lisa Sy is back: yet another freshman for you, Jimi5.

I feel your pain man.
With the exception of Freshman Presidential Elections, I will have not one a single election in all of High School.
Last year I ran for Executive Board of Student Council and lost (had a terrible speech that didn't go well at all, devistated by it)
And this year I ran for NHS president. With this I had chaired an event (Pagent for our local fair (the peach festival)) that was on the brink of getting canceled due to the lack of profit it was making, and I turned it around and heard nothing but great remarks about it. I lost in last place to a girl who has done little all year and wrote a horrific speach (in that she didn't write one) and the killer is that the kid who won is lazy, has done nothing for NHS all year and won (he even has the reputation of being a lazy *).
Needless to say I'm not doing anything for anyone in NHS anymore, I hate my school and I hate the people in it. I always do so much work to lose to the "most popular canidate" who would rather lift a beer can over a finger to do something.
Sorry about this rant, I've just kind of gotten sick of it. I want to go to college so bad, and start all over again, hopefully with people who aren't such big *
s as the ones at my highschool.

Most elections end up unpredictable. People sometimes vote in kids they think total losers just for the fun of it. It's so discouraging for people like me who actually want to make a difference in the school. :(

Apparently I only lost by a handful of votes (less than ten). How depressing.

elections are a somewhat big deal in our school!

let's see:

president: 2 candidates, one who's been pres for like 4 years? or something and the other's just some random kid who is running for fun. or maybe not, who knows? i don't think he'll win though. haha, i dunno if i'd laugh or cry if he won.

vp: 4 people, (me included) but i think our old vp is going to win.

sec: 2 people, one who's been a good secretary for the last two years and will probably win unless people all vote the other person just to have a change.

treasurer: 3 people, one who's been treasurer for the last two years and will probably win.

social manager: 4 people, who knows?

idc rep (stands for interdistrict council and basically facilitates stuff that happens within our district, not just the school) : 6 people, almost anybody could win, really.

basically our pres, sec, treasurer, probably vp and maybe social manager are all going to stay the same.

I'm sorry that you lost though. I say just run for stuco. I mean, there's nothing to be lost, right?

oh yeah, one kid is somehow running for prez, vp, and secretary..and he only shows up to 1/2 the meetings and he doesnt do the trips or out of school activities....people nominate him just because he's goofy and athletic which leaves him actually less time, esp. if he were prez......i mean hes a great guy and everything, but the other girl running would make a much better prez.

It's alright. If it makes you feel better, I'll say that I ran for Key Club Treasurer and lost to a popular kid. What infuriates me is that our faculty advisor told him that he was forbidden from running for office, considering that he did not fulfill his obligations as this year's newsletter editor. And at the last minute, our advisor puts his name on the ballot, and he wins. And I personally talk to my advisor and tell him that he made a mistake in letting this kid win, and that our club will soon fall apart next year. Advisor admits, "Man, he shouldn't have ran for office. He didn't even fulfill his obligations". What a frickin' dumbass. Why did he let the kid run, then? So now my best bet is sophomore rep (or committee head), but thankfully you don't have to have an office in order to become your region's Lieutenant Governor. Sorry. I had to vent.

I will now campaign for next year's class president... sigh I don't know where I'm getting at these days...

I would say run again for a representative position. I lost the election to be Student Body President this year but enough people voted for me that I didn't really need to campaign for Senior Class President. People will remember the stuff you did running for Treasurer and will be more likely to vote for you. Our school had about twenty people running as well for Class Senator, 6 for Class VP, and 6 for Class President.

OP: I know how you feel. Since fourth grade, I've been an avid candidate for student government. I've been in twelve elections since then. Of the twelve, I've lost in four. You just have to keep trying and trying. Don't give up. Sure, it's a popularity contest sometimes, but hey, that doesn't guarantee anything. Win or lose, I've enjoyed running. It's a great experience. I've had the opportunity to be in all offices of the council. Just a future tip: it's the speech that really gets the crowd going. Posters & stickers are additional bonuses, but your voice and enthusiasm is what gets the audience pumped up. Good luck on your next run!
