The American University of Paris

I’m a sophomore in the pre-ib and I’m interested in this school. Any comments?

Hi Samirb, I am an alumnus of the university. I studied Global Communications at the university. From my experience, I can tell you the following:

AUP is all about what you make out of it. If you are the kind of guy/girl that likes to just sit at home, order food and watch TV, then AUP won’t be the right place for you. But if you are interested in broadening your horizon, exploring different cultures, meeting people from all over the world, attending study trips, taking a variety of different courses, discussing topics with your professors, etc. then AUP is the place for you. But you have to want that to get the most out of your experience at AUP. During my time I saw several students that weren’t happy because they wanted everything to come to them without having to go out of their way to get it. I for one loved my experience there and I know that IB students can get some very good scholarships as well.

As for the reputation of the school that some people sometimes question, I can only say that I successfully work in digital marketing today. I have friends that went on to MIT, Oxford, King’s College and other top universities for graduate and post-graduate studies.

Let me know if you have any questions and I can try to answer them.

Thanks for the response just saw it. Do you know how easy it would be to get financial aid for I come from a lower-middle-class family.

That depends on several factors. The FA awards are based on academic merit (how good are you in school?) and financial need (how much do you need the money?). In my case it took into account my previous education and what my parents earned etc. I recently read that they gave out 4 million euros in financial aid last year, which is a lot, considering that it is a small school.

The best tip I can give you is apply to FA as early as possible, which should increase your chances of getting financial aid. At the same time, if you are doing an IB, you will automatically get an IB scholarship based on your final grade. So work hard on your IB and I think you can get a scholarship of up to 20000 euros. I"d suggest to check their website for more details or just give one of the admissions counselors a call.

Thanks for the reply! If I were to go to this school on a low budget would I still be able to enjoy the study trips?

You absolutely can. I was on a relatively low budget myself and couldn’t afford one of the study trips to NYC or Moscow for example. However, study trips usually range between 50 EUR to 1500 EUR depending on destination and length of the trip. I didn’t go on many during my time but the few I participated in really enriched my experience at AUP. A lot of students also got part-time jobs, either at the university itself or as a baby sitter, english teacher, etc. That can certainly help with your budget. As far as I remember AUP also has some sort of financial aid award specifically for study trips. You have to apply for it and if you manage to get it, they will give you a bit of money that you can use for study trips. Hope that explains it a bit. You can always find more information about that sort of stuff on their website.

Thank you very much!
