So I called UCLA to see what was up with my rejection - someone on this thread said call to make sure that there weren't any mistakes - and lo and behold, they said I had a 3.75 GPA when I actually had a 3.8 (they said that only transferable classes were taken into account of the GPA but ALL my units are transferable) and they also didn't take into account that I had fulfilled all my prereqs (the rep said that I was missing a calculus prereq that I am currently taking). They said they "may" have made some mistakes and told me to appeal. Now I'm worried if Berkeley is going to reject me for the same reasons plus I'll probably have to complete an appeal. I'm rather furious at the school. If they had just told me "sorry your major was too damn competitive this year" I would understand but messing up my information?

I apologize in advance for any silly spelling or grammer errors for you nazis out there.

Think of it this way. UCLA gets tens of thousands of apps every year. While I'm sure that they take every precaution they can to ensure that your situation does not occur, it will occur. I don't know that it's UCLA's being "audacious" as much as it's UCLA's being a huge operation with tons of sub-units along the operations chain.

Just appeal and go from there. But make sure to get the mistakes you were told about verified with someone's NAME and OFFICE. Otherwise, it's just hearsay to whomever reads your letter.

I'm going to do the same thing if I'm rejected. What number did you specifically call and what did you specifically ask so that they didn't give you a generic answer like "we're sorry but we turned down many qualified applicants." Thanks.

Sounds to me that if the rep himself at UCLA suggested you appeal, then that's a good thing. Did you get his/her name? That's always a good idea for reference and all.

So, UCLA will actually divulge what information they got if you call them? Who should I call to do that? What do you actually say? "Hmm... so... how do I make sure you guys got the right information?"

Does UCLA have some sort of % of applicants admitted after the student appeal? I was just wonder how many of the applicants that have appealed the last couple of years actually got accepted...

I don't mean to imply that UCLA's process is audacious, but the fact that even after they admit to making mistakes they still require people to jump through the hoops seems in my opinion to be so.

Mistakes usually mean that you have to jump through hoops even if they are not your fault. If a school/company/agency loses your file, you have to go through the trouble of resubmitting it. If your check is lost, YOU have to provide proof of payment. That's just the way it goes. If you don't go through those hoops during a short time interval, you lose your right to appeal. It's the way it goes.

hotelmoscow: It must be frustrating, but just try to chill and get the appeal process done. I am really getting a strong feeling that you are in-very soon.

Well I figure worst comes to worst, I'll have fun in San Diego. And I can spend the weekend writing my appeal and if I get rejected from Berkeley too I can tweak it a bit for that school haha.

If I were you I'd storm into the admissions office and scream "appeal? APPEAL?! Ah-Peel off yo FACE!" then tackle the nearest admissions worker.
