The best CA state school to go to for teaching?

I’m a high school senior with a 3.6 gpa and a SAT score of 1580, and I was hoping for some suggestions on which California schools I should apply to, I’m looking for one that has a good teaching program, is safe, and preferable has small classes. Are there any schools you guys can suggest?

Unfortunately money is an option so it’s basically state schools for me.

I have looked at
San Jose State
Chico State
Sonoma State

DO you have any nuggets of info to say about them?

All those schools offer Teach For America after Graduation. I’m sure you are aware of what that program is.

Go to any, major in anything, apply for “Teach for America”, work there for 2-3 years, go to UCLA for Grad School for Education (one of the best in the nation), then be a teacher.

Small classes at a CA state school? Are you joking? These schools are in a severe budget crisis and already large classes are getting larger.

For teaching any of the state schools are fine. Choose the one you’ll enjoy most. I’d also look for the ones that seem the least overcrowded (avoid SDSU) as it is now taking 6 years to graduate for many at CSUs.

Of the ones you list, Chico seems have the most campus life, SJ is very much a commuter campus.

I’m talking small classes for California school, I’m well aware of the situation were in.

What is the difference between majoring in education or majoring in something else, since either way you take the test for the teaching certificate?

Majoring in Education will teach “how to teach” more than content, while majoring in a subject, say social studies, will leave you better informed of the content.

Oh… I didn’t know that.

Well I want to be a elementary school teacher…so now I’m lost as to what to do.

Okay, thanks guys for the info.

Well if you want to be an elementary school teacher, you aren’t really teaching one subject, unless its art or gym, etc. I would recommend majoring in education if you are on elementary teaching.

Things you learn in Education class:

-The flaws in the current public education system
-The Effectiveness of different Teaching Methods
-How the Budget allocation of public school causes problem

Thank you for your input and information. I am going to get more info before I make any big decision.

My first choice in colleges right now is Chico, because I have heard they have a good education program.[if i still do that] Although I am worried because I’m not a partier.

Are any of you elementary teachers? Do you enjoy teaching and how did you know it was for you?
