Misc
I moved at the end of 9 from an overrated public school to a very difficult private school in a whole new state. I was (and still am) distracted by my surroundings which makes me look back up north.

My parents' relationship has been strained throughout my high school career. The move exacerbated things and culminated in their separation during my finals of junior year.

Schools
UMich- Ann Arbor (brother attends)(early response)(dream school)
UMass-Amherst
McGill University
Ohio State University
Penn State University
University of Toronto
Emory University (or oxford college)
Cornell University (possibly ED)
University of Wisconsin
Univ. Illinois- Urbana Champaign
Northwestern
WUSTL
UC Berkeley
UCLA
Boston University
Boston College
FSU
Syracuse
Northeastern University
Binghamton University (SUNY-Binghamton)
UConn
Lafayette
Lehigh
UMiami
UMinnesota
UPitt

Obviously I don't expect you to chance me for everything, but anything you feel like doing would help.
Thanks.

Oh yeah, I was also wondering about my chances of admission to the Honors College and/or Computer Science major at UMass Amherst.

Add Rose Hulman to the list as well.

(3.26 w/o freshman year, explained below)

i dont quite understand where you explain it lol

i think you're gpa is a little low for most of the schools you list; but you have 1 more semester to pull it up.

right now i'd say BU, UConn, UPitt, SUNY-Binghamton and UMinnesota are matches. UMiami might be easy for you just because you're in state. but i'd say its a higher match.

the rest im either not sur eabout, or they're reaches (eg. Cornell, Emory, Northwestern, Lehigh, McGill, UMich..)

Living in Florida doesn't help for UMiami since it's private. I don't really understand your GPA system but it seems sort of low ... I'd say UMiami is a high match/low reach.

Well I did explain. I explained the domestic problems and the fact that I moved. The average GPA for my class is about 3.15.

Umm. Even with a tough private high school, and a very early app, your chances for UMich are iffy. If you have an improving trend of grades, they will probably defer you and ask for your mid year grades. That can be a downer of a first message to get, so I suggest you pair that early app with a school that will take you very early on. I don't know if UMiami fits that description since it would recognize the difficulty and quality of your high school; and maybe one of the Florida state schools. I say this out of experience since I personally know two kids with stats close to yours from a rigorous private prep and that is how they fared with UMich. You won't have time to get another set of tests and grades in place for EA or early rolling so you are going to have to go with what you have for early apps, and you are right on the border of getting accepted.

Most of those schools are reaches for you. The state schools look hard at that gpa, and the the privates that may know your school are not going to run and jump for joy at the test scores. Your gc would probably have a running list of how kids from your school fare with a number of those private schools that will be far more accurate than any of our guesses. But I can tell you that most of the state schools tend to focus on that danged gpa. Michigan will hand do your gpa and look at your app carefully, a great job for such a big school, but you are definitely on the border for acceptance for them.

What would be hard to get in :

Penn State University
Cornell university
UC Berkley
&
U of Miami (even though your instate)

Otherwise, you definitley have a good chance at the other schools. Don't necessarily give up on the schools I listed that 'might' be hard to get in, try - maybe you'll be lucky. What you explained under you MISC - did that effect you academically? I think you can explain that somewhere in your application but, I'm not sure. I had a family issue back in 9th grade too, it affected me immensely but, not enough to make my grades sink too low. I also went to a different school in 10th grade. I switched from a crappy school to an excellent school under the IB program. So I was taking much more rigorous classes under a competitive atmosphere. I know colleges will be wondering why I didn't get as good of grades in 9th grade with the easier classes compared with how well I did in 10th grade with much harder classes. Anyway, that might be similar to your situation academically through high school? Good luck, though!

^^Miami is a private university so it doesn't matter if OP is in-state.

yea, that's why I listed it under 'what would be hard to get in'

future-scientist: Uhhh, Michigan is easier to get into than Penn State? And yes, your situation is somewhat similar. The school I attend now is definitely more difficult but I'm not sure colleges think that. I also learned that my old school used a 3.8 for an A, so I really had a 3.95 for those 2 semesters I was there. Anyways it was definitely a tough transition for me.

cptofthehouse: I actually do have enough time to take a September ACT in order to do the Early Response thing at UMich. My school tends to send a lot of kids to LACs which I'm not overly interested in. My counselor also seems fairly confident in me getting into Boston College, Vassar College, Oxford College (emory), Case Western, Lehigh, Lafayette, and Wake Forest (disagree with him about that one). Our school tends to get a lot of kids accepted to those schools in addition to UMich and a few others. I never thought of the value of looking at my GC's scattergrrams. I always thought they were nifty things but not necessarily useful, but I can definitely see how they could be. For a lot of the midwest schools (Wisconsin, Mich, etc.) I plan to only submit my ACT at this point because it's higher on the middle 50% for those schools. Anyways, thanks for your insight, particularly on Michigan.

Well, I haven't really looked into Michigan. If your suggesting it's harder than Penn (to get in) then I might as well have a look at it. =/

i'm applying to like 14 schools. So your list is as bad as mine. :o
good luck,

You do realize that you're going to spend approximately $1600 applying to schools despite the fact that you probably won't get into about half of the ones on your list, right?

Soulside Journey: Obviously I'm not applying to every school I have down, that would be ridiculous. Thanks for acting like a pompous jerk like so many others on this forum, though.

Future-scientist: It's harder to get into than Penn State. The test scores are much higher there and average gpa is about the same or maybe higher at UMich.

It's definitely easier to get into Penn State, than UMich, trust me.
I think your GPA is too low for BC, Emory, Cornell, Northwestern, WUSTL. UCLA and Cal will never happen, I can tell you that. I dont know what it takes for admission to UofT and McGill. I'd say you have far too many reaches, which would make your list a little more reasonable. Where in SoFla are you?

I also don't think your list is realistic. For example, with your current grades and scores you would be a reach for UCLA even if you were instate.

I don't even know why I put Berkeley and UCLA on there to be honest...

^ That would be a good indication of where not to apply to, lol.

Buddy, I'm just being realistic. You never stated you weren't applying to all of those schools, so I simply assumed you were going to. Also, I have no reason to be pompous considering that my GPA isn't too much better than yours. :P
