The Business school?

Heya! So i had some questions regarding the business school.
I'm from Arizona, and University of Arizona has a VERY good business school (Eller). I know also that UW has a great business school, so i'm really curious as to which one is better for me.

For any of you in the Undergrad business school, or not yet officially admitted, i have some questions:

1) How do they help prepare pre-business kids to get in to the actual business school? Do you have to fend for yourself when it comes to applying, preparing for the interview, etc?

2) Is it true that if you join the honors college, that you don't get credit for any of your high school A.P. classes?

3) Does UW's business school have any study abroad programs specifically for business students? (e.g. the kind of thing where a bunch of students and teachers go together)?

4) Is there a business dorm at UW? What's it like?

5) How big are the average business classes? Do they get smaller as you advance in the school? What about honors business classes?

6) What's life like for a business student?

7) Do they help set you up with internships? If you graduate from UW is there a good chance that you will get a good job in Seattle?

If there's anything else you can tell me about the business school, please share!

Eller’s entrepreneurship program destorys UW Foster, but UW has a clear edge in finance, accounting, and maybe marketing.

Foster is a two year program, and mildly competitive if you don’t get in Freshman Direct.

Honors is stingy with its credits, as it won’t let you waive anything from its core. That said, I’m pretty sure not ALL of your precious APs are thrown in the trash.

As with most majors, intro classes are crowded with specialized tracks getting smaller. Finance is popular, and thus will have larger class sizes than the other tracks though.

Local placement is great, but Foster’s career center is a source of criticism relative to peer programs. Finance and accounting should land you jobs, but other tracks have to fend for themselves.

Entrepreneurship -> UofA
All else -> UW

*post based on anecdotal evidence from friends currently attending

I was admitted freshman direct but will be attending Tepper at CMU in 2014.

I’m a pre-business sophomore at UW, so I thought I would add on.

As far as pre-business resources go, there are advisers at Foster you can make an appointment with if you have any questions. I haven’t visited them personally yet, because I am not that worried about applying, but I have heard they are pretty helpful and honest.

As far as study abroad goes, Foster has exchanges with I think around a dozen different universities abroad. Going on one of these exchanges will guarantee your credits transfer since the programs are affiliated. I think the Foster exchanges only let you go for a quarter or semester (whatever the university you are exchanging at is on), not a full year, because most of the programs they can only have on Foster student at that particular university at a time, so they want to give multiple people the chance to go each year… If you want to go abroad with UW professors there are also exploration seminars, which are always held in the summer in the month before school starts. There are usually about 2-4 business exploration seminars each year. And of course you could always set up your own study abroad trip, but who knows if your credits will transfer when you return.

There is a business community in Haggett Hall if you want to live in the dorms. It is about 100 students and pretty tight knit from what I’ve heard. And Haggett is a nice dorm to start out in as a freshman.

Right now the pre-business classes I am taking are around 200 people. You can see the size of various classes by looking at the UW Time Schedule.

I haven’t gotten to the point where I am apply for internships yet, so I can’t really say much there, but Foster doesn’t hold classes on Fridays with the idea in mind that this will make it easier for students to hold an internship while enrolled.

Hope that information helps. I like the Foster community a lot, and they’re opening up a brand new business school building this fall, which makes me all the more excited to return for class in the fall!
