UT is going to be my backup school and I’ve heard from many mothers of seniors at my high school that Callaway House is the best housing but it’s hard to get a room because they’re so sought after (I’m the first child and my parents don’t really know anything about college so we rely on them for information about these things). I’m currently a junior in high school, is it possible and/or appropriate for me to send The Callaway House Austin a housing application this soon?
Also, I’ve done a lot of research into this and was just wondering if any of you have lived or are living there and what it’s like. For example, is it loud, do lots of sorority and frat students stay there, etc.
Thank you!
Many people will tell you to get on the wait list now and pay deposits. We fell for this when some parents told us that and wasted money. You’re okay with waiting until at least when you’re applying. My daughter got on the waitlist in July and was off the waitlist by March. They’ll tell you they usually fill up to 60 off the waitlist so if you’re at least 1-60 it should be fine.
@momof5tx she’s #17 today (was 35 a week ago - but started out in the 70’s in November.) So there’s definite movement, but things could come to a halt any time. They say they’ll start seeing more cancellations in April when the other schools start making their announcements, and when kids find out if they’re off the UT wait-list.
I think she’ll get in. If she needs a roommate let me know. Mine is on a 2x2 double suite and needs roommates
@momof5tx I’ll let you know - I think she’s already confirmed with 3 other girls. I understand Callaway does a good job of “matching.”
Thanks!
I applied for Callaway housing (the 2x2 plan) this past August and I got my housing contract in early October. (I’m currently a senior in HS). I filled out and mailed the lease a day or two after I got it, before there was any waitlist, and got an email saying my space was reserved a couple weeks later. So if you apply in July or August, you should be fine and there shouldn’t be any waitlist - that’s how it worked in my case, anyways. Good luck!
I live there now, and it’s definitely the nicest place to stay near campus, and has been everything they promised. And the food is AMAZING. My friends come eat with me here all the time because they’re getting so sick of Jester food. HOWEVER, there is a CRAPTON to Greeks here, especially on the upper floors (because they have to move in early for rushing). If you plan on rushing, I would recommend it for sure, because you’ll inevitably meet tons of people here. I am not Greek, though, and this has caused me to feel isolated from people here. For instance, during the little socials they occasionally have, if you don’t show up with friends, you’rr pretty much on your own.
Don’t get me wrong, I love the facilities and everyone seems nice, but they already have tons of friends and a busy social life outside of Callaway, so it’s not a great environment for meeting new people. I hardly ever even see my suite mates because they’re so busy with their sororities. That’s probably what I’m most envious of dorms for- the intimate environment. All my friends who live in jester know their neighbors and even hang out with them from time to time thanks to wing meetings, parties, and movie nights. These are just things to consider!
