Would anyone like to share any personal stories of their commuter life to Rutgers? After 2 years of living in on-campus dorms (and almost a hotel!), I've decided that I will become a commuter. It is a decision that was actually not tough to make. I found that living on campus didn't really provide me with much opportunity anyway except for allowing me to sleep in late since class was only a 10-minute walk away!

Oh if you go to the Newark campus as well, I don't mind hearing from you either. I've sent in an application to transfer to Newark since it will be cheaper and move convenient to commute to rather than New Brunswick (2 hour round trip, yikes!)

Thanks in advance if anyone actually responds to this before I have to BUMP this =)

my sister commutes, her only complaints are parking (she hates buses)
my sister always parks on meters haha you cant have a permit to park on meters.
What campus are most of your classes on?

My classes this semester are mostly on College Avenue (3), 2 on Douglass. I currently live on College Avenue.

I plan on taking the train, though. I hate driving, especially on the NJ Turnpike. I don’t know. Mostly likely I will transfer to Newark since I’ll be living at home and the train ride is 20 minutes from where I live. New Brunswick takes a whole hour =

I love driving on the turnpike haha
If you have been accepted to new brunswick, why transfer to newark when its much tougher to get into the new brunswick campus??
I’m sure there are ways that take less than an hour via driving, Also if you do commute via vehicle, and only park at meters, dont get a parking permit because you will be ticketed.

It must be weird that I’m transferring to Newark from New Brunswick when most people do the opposite, haha. I don’t mind the whole thing about Newark being less competitive than NB since either way, it’s still Rutgers. And I’m only majoring in English, not Engineering or any of the professional schools. =D

Newark is only 20 minutes away by train. And my parents aren’t willing to let me take the train 75 minutes a day to New Brunswick and 75 minutes back. I do feel kind of sad that I will be leaving New Brunswick, but honestly, I have been having a rough year here even though I love it. I need to be back home with my family.

And the Turnpike . . . it scares me! Too many trucks >.< And at the moment I don’t have a car since my dad messed up my car in an accident.

The turnpike divide into a car lane and a truck lane, for the future, take the car lane
and i know what you mean by being home, i was away freshman year in dorm and decided the best thing was to live home.
I would transfer in your situation just to live home :)

I forgot about that car/truck lane. My dad gets super excited when we reach the divide. He hates the truck drivers, haha =D

As much as it pains me a bit to transfer, I think it will be best. Although I won’t part with New Brunswick too much (I’ll still make trips down there for marching band practices in the Fall =P )

Are you sure you can be in the NB marching while you matriculate at Newark? I didn’t think you could do that. BTW, what instrument do you play? And the trucks aren’t THAT bad. It’s just that they’re always on a tight schedule so they’re always in a bit of a rush. If you drive laid back, they won’t hesitate to pass you or tailgate you, even if they’re not supposed to. Either pass them, or stay out of their way.

As a Rutgers Newark Commuter, I have three complaints.
crappy parking (the four hundred + dollars yearly prepaid ez pass only guarantees you to get into the parking deck. Not a parking spot. Deck 1’s parking space gets full after 9. Deck 2 gets full by 10. After that you have to park a mile or two away from the main campus.
Lack of good food. (expensive too!)
Not a lot of courses.

I am from passaic county, so I take route 21 to get to Rutgers. It is about a half an hour drive.

Beast Morgan: Our director allows people from any of the Rutgers campuses to join the marching band, even kids from local NJ community colleges and other schools in Jersey. We have a kid in the drum-line who goes to Rider, and a boy in the sax section attended Newark this past year while in the band. (I play sax, btw). I still hate those trucks! I think it is a fear because I haven’t driven in a long time, esp. now that I don’t have a car for the time being =(

Shy 11 The parking and food part doesn’t bother me since I will be taking the train to Newark Penn Station and won’t sign up for a meal plan. The course thing did turn me off a bit, simply because now I can’t continue to take French. They only had elementary and 2 courses taught by the same guy! So I probably will have to take a French course at my local community college either during the fall or next summer. =(

It’s still up in the air. I won’t decide if I want to transfer right away until the school year is over. I want to convince my parents to let me commute to New Brunswick, but even I too think it might be a bit hectic going back and forth =

Can people from other local schools really join? I wish I had known this a year ago, I would have joined then. For now, hopefully I will be accepted to NB in the fall and I can join then (euphonium/baritone). While I still think Newark would be a step down, it depends what you want to get out of college. That round trip may be too long to justify NB. However, if you take the train, you should keep in mind the multitasking you could do. You could do your homework on the train, making it much less of a waste of time. It wouldn’t be too hard to do your reading assignments on the train. I think a train to NB could made to work pretty well in this fashion.

^ If you go to a local Jersey school (and if it is convenient for you), you are allowed to join. You don’t have to be a student at Rutgers NB or Rutgers in general to join. Join the marching band for the next season! We** NEED** more baritone players. We only have like 7. Send a private message to me if you want more information (and search on facebook for our Marching Scarlet Knight Interest Group. Our director and other kids are willing to answer any questions you post on there)

Oh, I decided that I will stay in New Brunswick. I saw the course listing for Newark, and oh my goodness, it was very limited. I can’t do 7:01 classes or classes that end after 9, bleh. They don’t even have many French courses. Only 3 taught by the same guy 0_o Thanks for the responses guys!
