With the exception of Snell-Hitchock, if you sent in your housing stuff by mid-April, you should get your first choice. Only EA admits who submitted their housing stuff before Mid-March have a realistic chance at Snell-Hitchcock.

I’m in the very awesome position of choosing between dorms at Chicago.
Right now Max and South Campus are first and second place on my housing forms, but I’m really torn between the two.
Is there any reason to choose SC over Max? (Disregard the distance from the quad)

PersonGuy- unless you get pulled in as a roommate by a current student, as a transfer student you’ll be living in Stony Island, a dorm reserved only for transfers and some upperclassmen. Stony is apartment-style, a little further from campus than most, but definitely a nice dorm- you get a full kitchen, living room, two bedrooms and two baths split between four people.

Will the new South Campus dorm be open to transfer students?

As far as I know, Stony Island is now the only dormitory available to transfer students. You will be able to put in a request to move out after the 3rd week of classes if you don’t like it there and do want to move to South Campus, but living with other transfer students and upperclassmen who know the ropes (and a resident assistant/resident heads used to transfer student questions) can be a really helpful aspect of Stony.

I don’t know where you got this information, but I’m pretty sure it’s not true. I know too many transfers that moved directly into Blackstone upon entering the College. Plus, new transfers get housing sheets in which they can request their dormitories. If new transfers were confined to Stony, these wouldn’t be necessary.

How’s the storage situation at the end of the year at MaX P?

From the Housing Office (via my D who lives in Max West):

STORAGE
Students Leaving The House System/Moving Off-Campus:
Residents who will not be returning to University housing next year must take all of their belongings with them when they leave. This includes all items now stored in the storage rooms and bicycles. Anything left behind will be considered abandoned and will be discarded.

Students Returning To The House System:
Residents who have room reservations for 2009-2010 may store up to 5 boxes of their personal belongings in the storage area of the residence hall where they will be living next year. Items may not be stored in student rooms or closets. Students who are participating in a University of Chicago study abroad program for the Autumn 2009 quarter may store their belongings in their current dorm as long as they have a housing contract on file with the Office of Undergraduate Student Housing for Winter Quarter 2010. Students moving to South Campus Residence Hall will receive summer storage information with their confirmation statements reflecting next years housing and dining assignment.

Students are discouraged from storing valuable items such as computers, printers, stereos. These items are particularly targeted for theft. The University does not bear responsibility for damage to or theft of property left in residence hall storage areas. It is expected that students or their families will carry property insurance which would cover such losses should they occur.

We can accept for storage only boxes, luggage and trunks which are properly packaged, tied, and tagged as if for shipment with your name and home address. Items not in condition for shipment will not be accepted. Storage tags will be available at each residence hall desk.

Special trunk room hours will begin on Thursday, June 11. Signs will be posted a week in advance specifying trunk room hours in each building. Trunk rooms are not accessible during the summer. Please check the schedule posted in your building or the building you are moving to for exact hours.

Please check with your front desk to see if your building has indoor summer bicycle storage space. Bicycles left inside for the summer must be tagged with a luggage ID tag (available at the front desk). Bicycles left in storage areas without proper tagging and all bikes left chained outside of residence halls will be considered abandoned and will be removed.

Thanks runnersmom. For S everything is Ok and there’s plenty of time, but unless a miracle happens I can see myself flying into Chicago next week.

Well, then you might see me! I’m going in next Saturday because my D needs to move out of Max by 3pm on Saturday and can’t move into her apartment until late Sunday/early Monday. Home for her belongings will be the back of the SUV I just rented. This is all complicated by the fact that she will only be able to come home for 5 days and needs to return to Chicago by the 21st so she can start her job on the 22nd. Fun, fun!

rmom, yipes, thanks for the heads up! He’ll be back sooner than I was thinking!

Phuriku, Blackstone has since changed from an upperclass-only dormitory to an all-class dormitory, and has been since fall of 2007. Currently Stony Island is designated as the transfer students’ dormitory; this is indeed a change from years past. Transfers may choose to move out after the waiting period (I think it’s three weeks in to first quarter) until the general waitlist opens in the fall, but will live in Stony beforehand.

Just wanted to bump this thread in case someone else finds it helpful.

What is bad about Stony? I can’t see any negatives except for the walk

I don’t know how current this information still is, but I thought I’d bump it nonetheless for admitted students/prospects.

So, is there an option for people who want to still feel connected to the school but have a social life as well…?

can we get some more current opinions about dorms? i’m thinking of bj, but i also like to party, so i’m thinkin max and south as well; any help is appreciated.

This thread is super old, should NOT have been bumped.
