Dorms?

I have made my final decision to go to the University of Chicago, and I was just wondering if anyone could tell me about what the dorms are really like (I'm trying to pick out dorms but I don't have a chance to visit campus until June).

So far I'm thinking about Snell-Hitchcock, Pierce, Max Palevsky, or Broadview. B-J also seems like a fun dorm, but I'm not sure what the pros/cons are for each.

when did you put in your deposit, if you put it in today... i dont think you will get S/H. most people prefer max p because of its location. pierce has small rooms and you can find a plethora of posts about dorms...

My son loves Broadview. It's an old hotel. Practically all singles but not his. Wants same dorm next year.

I chose Broadview as my first choice, primarily because I want a really big single dorm with a private bathroom, but also because I want to live in a house with relatively few people (and a "community" feel). My only problems with Broadview are (1) that it's too far from campus (but then again, I need the exercise), and (2) that it has fewer freshmen than the other dorms.

Is Broadview a popular dorm? I sent in my housing form at the beginning of April; do you think I'll get in?

You'll get into Broadview, but you won't get a really big room. Freshmen get stuck with the smaller rooms. My girlfriend's room is about twice as large as mine (she's a 2nd-year). Kind of sucks.

Ah, phuriku, the Broadview 'expert," right? How do you like the dorm? Do you? I could always change my preference if it sucks for freshmen...

It doesn't really suck for freshmen, and many love it (the distance is the only thing that drives some people crazy). The only problem is that some freshmen have really small dorms. Other freshmen are more fortunate. I'd say that about 2/3 of freshmen get stuck with smaller rooms and the other 1/3 get medium-sized ones. And even if you get a small one, it's not like it's a horrible option in comparison with other dorms. You'll still probably have more space to yourself than the people in Max P, Shoreland, and definitely Pierce. Plus, a single is the same price as a double for freshmen.

Where is the new dorm located?

There's a great virtual dorm tour here, with pictures, descriptions, and a map:

Where is the new dorm located?

It's called Blackstone. As the map shows, it's pretty near campus. Information on it at this time is sparse; see for yourself. But the room selection guide says:quote Shared Singles, (Total Capacity) 79, (Type of Bath) Private, (Single-Sex Floors Available) No, (Dining Hall Attached) No.

Great info. Thank you.

Maybe I am confused, but Blackstone is supposed to supplant Shoreland? I had read that Shoreland will closed in 2009 and residents will be given priority in a new dorm.

Answer my own question: Chicago Maroon | High costs delay, downsize new dorm

The new dorm is supposed to supplant Shoreland. Blackstone is essentially a collection of University-owned apartments-- the only reason first-years are living there now is because we overbooked this year.

Don't give up on Snitchcock (S-H to non-residents)!

I submitted my housing app in June (they lost the first one) and got a terrific double-double with a second year (it occasionally works out that they don't take roommates in doubles, and room selection is in may for us). Several Snellians requested the dorm very near the deadline.

It is an awesome community. Scav! Bartlett! Armadillos! Most stylin' building!

And yes, Blackstone newly sortakinda takes first years, but the term New Dorm generally refers to the yet-unnamed tower dorm being built attached to BJ.

Is april 13th deposit too late for Max P?

I hope not...because that's going to be me too

Probably not. Max is huge.

yea, let's keep pour fingers crossed, i officially sent my housing info in a few hours ago/.

Current students - would you be willing to say what dorm(s) you have lived in and share some of your personal experiences in them? While the bullet-point pro/con stuff is great and all, I for one also like to get more subjective/anecdotal information in order to feel like I'm making an informed decision. Thanks a lot for all of your insights on the forum, by the way.

Also, question on Hitchcock house... I'm encountering some contradictions on single-sex living arrangements for first years. The housing website seems to suggest that Hitchcock's first year sections are entirely single-sex, but I'm pretty sure that my S-H tour guide said that while the tiny floors within those sections are single-sex, the overall sections are co-ed. Can someone clear this up?

[For those who are curious to know what I'm talking about, Hitchcock isn't divided up into large floors like typical dorms; instead, it's divided into tower-like groupings called sections.]

Great suggestion another student! I have just one random question to add:

Is the food in Pierce that bad? I stayed in Max P when I visited and my host told me that Bartlet is like gourmet while Pierce is like cold McDonalds. I had the food (amazing!!) at Bartlet but never got to eat at Pierce.
