The Completely Unofficial 08-09 Chicago Dorm Guide

I love the house tables in BJ.

Prospies -- In BJ, we are very welcoming! Come and visit and sit at a house table and start talking to people; there's no need to sit at the open table. The dining area in the back of the BJ Dining Hall is for BJ houses, the front is for the Shoreland. Come sit in the back... It is way cool.

Ok here are my rankings:
1)Palevsky
2)Pierce
3)Buton-Judson

I basically want a dining hall and main quad close by.

Does Palevsky fill up fast? Because that's like my first choice and I probably won't send it in my commitment fee until late January.

The dorm guide says the bathrooms are "community" at Pierce and BJ. How does that work? is there a long line in the mornings? And curtain shower? Sorry if my questions are stupid but I don't know much about dorm life. lol.

The community bathroom on my floor in BJ is great. There are only 5 people on my floor (all in singles). We share a bathroom with 3 sinks, 2 toilets, and 2 showers. I've never had to wait for a shower or toilet before. The bathroom is cleaned everyday by one of the maintenance workers in BJ, so the showers are always clean. The showers have curtains and the water volume is good and there are hooks for your towels and bathrobes and whatever else.

okay thanks for answering!

so when do financial aid packages go out?

For those in the know: when exactly is the dorm situation hashed out? I may not submit my deposit until later, but I was an EA admit. Do I still get the dorm preference, or no? When exactly are we asked for our choice?

and oh my god, is broad a popular dorm, because a single + bath is EXACTLY what I want. Do most people get their first choice dorm, or will waiting cost me?

edit: it sounds like blackstone is broadview (+ closer to campus) but ( -house system). Hmrph, this is going to be a difficult choice.

Blackstone is not meant for first year students. First years were put there this year because of overflow, essentially. It should not be one of your housing choices, unless I'm mistaken. I believe if you put Broadview as your first choice and submit your housing forms relatively early, you have a good chance of getting it.

If you guys haven't gotten your housing information yet, you'll probably get it in the mail soon. I think there's a certain date EA admits get preference until. After that date, you're thrown in with RD admits, and it's first come, first served.

But don't expect to hear anything definitive until early-mid August, because you won't.

To threedaysgrace if you send your housing form in by the end of January you and Max is your first choice I would bet that you would almost assuredly get it, I was accepted early action last year, but didn't send in housing forms in until April and still got into Max as my first choice.

^^Okay Thanks d_leet! Also are there exercise rooms in the gym across the street (forgot what it is called but remember seeing it when i visited!)

Full gyms both across the street (Henry Crown) and a half a block away (Ratner). I don't know what an "exercise room" is, but there is plenty of space in HC to do yoga or stretching or whatever.

I guess the correct term was gym lol.
I mean rooms with treadmills, stationary bikes, and other exercise equipment. I really like keeping in shape.

so... where exactly are the gyms located? like across the street from where? and half a block away from? ... can anybody list the houses in order of which ones are closest to the ones that are farthest? thank you very much!

Ratner (nice) is on 55th and Ellis; Henry Crown (not as nice) is three short blocks away, on 56th and University. (That probably means nothing to you, but that's where they are). Both are a block or two away from the quads.

Dorms closest to the quads, from closest to farthest (approximate):
Snell-Hitchcock
Max Palevsky
Burton-Judson
Pierce
Maclean
Breckinridge
Broadview*
Shoreland*

Broadview and Shoreland have asterisks because they have bus service-- Breck is far and has spotty bus service, but it seems like everybody who lives there is in love with it. Breck is not super-far... I would say a 15 minute walk to the quads at most, 10 if you make it brisk, but living in Max P or S-H will spoil you :-)

would someone be willing to explain the dining hall set-up (i'm sure they mentioned this on the tour, but I've forgotten all the details)? Does each dorm get its own dining hall? I know the food at chicago has a good reputation (seemed good when I was there, too), but are there any dining halls one should avoid? I seem to remember bartlett being known as the best..

Bartlett is generally thought to be the best dining hall, though a lot of people at BJ prefer their own. BJ and Pierce are all you can eat, while Bartlett is a la carte.

There are three dining halls on campus: Bartlett, Pierce, and BJ. Bartlett is next to Bartlett in the Bartlett quad, which is across the street from the main academic quad. Pierce and BJ are both in those respective dorms. Students are assigned to a dining hall based on their house within their dorm. All of Bartlett and Snell-Hitchcock eat at Bartlett. Pierce, the top half of the Shoreland, and Broadview eat at Pierce. BJ and the bottom half of the Shoreland eat at BJ. I have no idea where Breck or Maclean eat. Each house has its own table (or two) at a dining hall, so there's a Wick table at Pierce, a Fallers table at BJ, and a Hoover table at Bartlett. Most people eat at their house tables for most meals, though students can sit with friends at their house tables, sit at open tables, or eat at one of the other places on campus, such as Hutch or the C-Shop. Students are given a meal plan that makes sense with their house's dining hall. Students in houses that eat at BJ or Pierce (which are all you can eat) have meal plans made up mostly of "meals," which can be spent at either BJ or Pierce (though they're usually spent at whichever dining hall their house table is at). Students who eat at Bartlett have meal plans made mostly of Bartlett points, which are spent like dollars at Bartlett. They can have friends swipe them at Pierce or BJ or they can spend a certain, set number of Bartlett points there. Students may also have flex dollars, which can be spent at Hutch (which has Subway, pizza, etc.), C-Shop (coffee shop), or one of the convenience stores on campus (Bart Mart inside Bartlett or Capones inside the Shoreland). Some students' meal plans may also include extra Bartlett dollars if Bartlett is not their default dining hall. It sounds really confusing to read, but it makes sense once you're there!

Breck eats at BJ, and Maclean eats at Pierce, to clear up that bit in corranged's post.

i feel silly for bringing up the bathroom question again but what is Pierce's co-ed bathrroms like? Is it safe to assume that they're pretty much like BJ's? Can I have some details please? Thank you!

I am resurrecting this thread simply because it has helped me a lot and shouldn't fall into obscurity!

Thanks to unalove, corranged, and the other chicagoans who make very pretty posts for prospies.

First post in weeks lol!
