housing

Have any of you considered which residence hall you plan to live in next year? Any ideas as to the different characters of the different accomodations?
Share the knowledge, I beseech you!

I have (not even in, lol.)

There are THREE factors that I looked at mainly:
Single?
Elevator?
Private Bathroom?

The fourth is distance from campus, but that was mainly an afterthought.

Four dorms matched the three criterion:
1. Shoreland
2. Broadview
3. Blackstone

After that, I'd choose to sacrifice either Elevator or Private Bath.

This leaves the 2 "Yes"s to compete with each other:

No Elevator, Yes Single/Private Bath:
Max Palevsky

No Private Bath, Yes Elevator/Single:
Maclean (Which I'm told sucks)

So there's my analysis.

Max P is not very tall - I already have to take three flights and it is nothing. Broadview - I see your point.

My demand for an elevator isn't walking down 3 flights to leave, it's the walking up a bunch of flights multiple times with heavy crap like a fridge/TV moving in.

my take on the dorms...

Pierce: no, i just don't like it
Shoreland: really nice and big but too far away for 1st year, plus it's going to be shut down in about 2 years
Max P: it's new and lacks some of the charm of the others, but other than that it sounds pretty good, and the location is excellent
Snell-Hitchcock: great dorm, only drawback is the community bathrooms, otherwise huge rooms and all
Broadview/BJ: i want a double or triple 1st year so i can meet people...
...don't know much about the others

Snell also has "no singles" as a drawback.

"no singles" is not a drawback for me, considering i don't want a single for my 1st year shrugs

Roommates suck. :-/

Where are you guys getting your info?

Snell has singles.

Max P. has an elevator.

Shoreland does not have singles.

A first year cannot get a single in Max P.

UChicago website does not mention an Elevator about Max P.

UC website about Shoreland:
Spacious doubles and triples (rooms average 13’ X 17.5’, with most triples have two such rooms side by side); *also singles, multi-bedroom suites (living room but not kitchen), and apartments (with kitchens). *

If Max P has an elevator, it may move up to #1 or #2 (Single, elevator, semi-private bath)

Max P has an elevator that goes to all the of floors...but it's a bit shakey. I took the stairs whenever I could while I was staying there.

./wave Andi!

I'm more worried about an elevator for moving stuff in and out, not so much for daily leaving.

I don't think Shoreland singles are available to freshman- or else I am certain that they are available to Freshman and I'm just trying to mess with your mind. What do YOU think?

It's like a choose-you-own-adventure story. neat.

Don't transfers get fancy apartements anyway?

...and is B J the one with fireplaces and baths in certain rooms? Because that is beyond fancy

I'm not a freshman :P

2 questions about Max P -
Are there any cable hookups in the rooms?
Is there a wireless network and how easy is it to connect to?

first choice: max p
second choice: pierce
third choice: snell-hitchcock

I already sent in my housing form, so there's no turning back now!

I have to see the dorms before I make up my mind. So, I should know in a little over a weeks time.

yes

I'm pretty sure that there is a wireless network everywhere.

Dude, there are hook-ups everywhere, you have to try and not hook-up with someone else. We're teenagers and we're away from home, the air int he dorms has got to be sexually charged. I just wouldn't recommend trying to hook-up with a person on your floor r even in your dorm. Dorm-cest and floor-cest are quite annoying, even though I don't know how at CHicago feel about that. IT would be really awkwad if you broke up with someone mid-year and had to see them everyday afterwards in your dorm.
