Can any current undergrads or anyone really comment on the Core reqs? I know what they are, but I'm interested to know how students feel about them...Also, how long does it take to complete the Core? Opinions, complaints, praises are all appreciated..

Also, I want to be an international relations major, if there are any current USC IR majors out there, do you see the Core reqs as a hinderance or a benefit to pursuing IR

There are six general education classes, two writing, and diversity course about which I have no idea. The interesting part is that USC wants us to have two semesters of science but is okay with no math.

The "core" is 8 or 9 courses which are intended to give everyone at USC a bit of a "liberal arts" education, using the theory that helps everyone out regardless of major. It's either 8 or 9 because a single course may count towards both one of the 6 GE requirements and also the diversity requirement at the same time.

The intention is that since a semester is on average 4 courses (16 units) "core" requirements fill one year. In practice, unless you're in something fancy like Thematic option, engineering, etc., you would complete 6-7 "core" courses freshman year and take 1-2 courses in your major, then complete the extra course or two you need later.

Also if your major requires foreign language, and you do not place out of the 1st or 2nd semester, you might displace a single GE until later so you can begin your language.
