The Current GPA system is flawed

So I’ve come here to rant about my college’s (and most other college’s) GPA System. It is completely and utterly idiotic, and frankly, my college experience is suffering immensely because of it. Well, the GPA system is structured something like this:
A=4.0, A-=3.7, B+=3.3, B=3.0 and so on…

In my college, GPA reigns supreme over all other matters. Everyone talks to each other about their grades, so all the students know precisely what their fellow hall mates GPAs are like. In my dorm, we all live in doubles, and the student in each room with the lowest GPA after each semester is frequently ostracized. Well, as it turns out, I barely ended up with a lower GPA than my roommate. I had to do all of his chores (laundry,cleaning, food-pickups, ironing etc..) Furthermore, when I walk the halls of the dorm, the high achieving students laugh at those students who couldn’t outperform their roommate. It’s as if I have a big “I” for idiot stamped on my forehead for eternity. However, I don’t feel like this constant ridicule from my peers is the problem, in fact, I feel like this mockery would be warranted if the GPA system was actually flawless. Oh, but flawed it is….

To explain, me and my roommate took the same schedules, both of us taking 4-4credit courses for a total of 16 credits each. Here are our grades
Me- Calc II-A, Bio I-B+, Fin Acct-A, Law Politics and Advanced Medicine-B+
My GPA was calculated to be a 3.65.
Calc II-A-, Bio I-A-, Fin Acct-A-, Law Politics and Advanced Medicine-A-
His GPA was calculated to be a 3.7.

Does anyone see what is wrong with this picture? Have I gone completely bananas? Surely not. Why should his GPA be higher than mine? Who deemed straight A minuses to be better than half A’s and half B pluses. This is absolute insanity, and I feel it should not be tolerated. I feel like the current GPA system rewards mediocrity. I’m the one excelled more frequently, yet he is rewarded? I’m not even advocating that my GPA should be higher, but they should certainly be equal. The following GPA system should be mandated across all institutions in order to salvage the integrity of college grading. It is as follows:
A=4.0, A-=3.665, B+=3.3,B=3.0 and so on…

By this system, my roommate and I would have identical GPA’s, hereby serving to remedy the issues of our current flawed system. If only the real world were so rational, so just…
Does anyone here share this same disdain for the current GPA system? I’d like to hear from other students who are experiencing these feelings of depression stemming from this very issue. It has been a rough couple months for me, and I really could use some support. Thanks

Obama can help you.

Please tell me you’re joking.

Your numbers fail.

Also, it’s not necessarily true that A- level performance is the exact median of B+ and A performance.

Overall, he did better, so his GPA is higher. I’m failing to see the problem.

Why do you have to do his chores because of GPA?

Your problem is not the GPA system but making stupid bets.

Assuming you’re being serious:

Your GPA:4+4+3+3=14/4=something

His GPA:3.665*4=14.66/4=something more than yours

lol what?

huang you fail at math , its 4+4+3.3+3.3 = 14.66/4

and anyway thats the dumbest idea ever, sure it will scale everyone relatively but there are some people who achieve straight A’s consistently…they will be unaffected by this and thus will gain by having an even higher gpa than everyone else…not an advantage to A-/B+ students

Wait until you are in the workforce and your performance reviews are reduced to 3 possibilities: Exceptional Performance, Met Performance Expectations, Below Performance Expectations…then how will you possibly split hairs!

Guys, he is clearly ■■■■■■■■ you all. No way this is real.

if by “excelled more frequently”, you mean “got a higher grade than him in 2 classes, and he got a higher grade than me in 2 classes”

i hope this is real. i’d like to imagine this dorm as such: the OP walking down the hall, head down, report card crumpled in hand, as all of his hallmates open their doors and spray him with silly string and throw food at him whilst high fiving and waving around huge pieces of paper that say “4.0”. The entire thing is in slow motion.

Where I go to school an A- is a 3.666 and a B+ is a 3.333.

Of course, at my school we also don’t value a person based solely on GPAs.

You might wanna take a look at those numbers again there, I think you’re the one who fails at math. My math is right, my numbers are wrong, my bad. But either way it still doesn’t add up. B+ would have to be 3.333.

someone is bitter?

what college in hell do you go to?! that sounds horrible. damn … intense academics apparently…

…cough…Binghamton… hack

haha yeaa this a joke. I was trying to parody some of the threads ive seen on here that blow the smallest of issues way out of proportion. Well, I enjoyed some of ur responses, loll

Weighted and unweighted GPA systems are flawed…in my school everyone in the top 20% of the class has abovea 4.0 yet some of them get C’s. its just from taking honors and AP that they get “extra points”
