The Definitive College Must Have List: Bath/Grooming List

There are a lot of “what should I bring to college” lists on this messageboard, but I (half-jokingly) refer to this one as the “Definitive List.” While enormously helpful, it can get tiresome to read through a thread with more than fifty replies, many often repeating the same items ten people before them have repeated. The items are never especially categorized, either.

The series of lists I will post are specifically categorized, come with links to examples, have personal notes and come from my own dorming experiences and the experiences of others. I’m not saying all the suggestions will work with you or are necessary to you, but I hope in some way they may help.

The Definitive Bath and Grooming List

BATH

1) Shower shoes (flip-flops)
2) Towels (at least two sets each of bath towel, hand towel, face towel etc)
3) Robe
4) Shower caddy/tote: should have a hole or holes in the bottom, for drainage
<a href="http://www.bedbathandbeyond.com/searchSKU.asp?order_num=-1&SSTR=shower+tote&go=1&%5B/url%5D">http://www.bedbathandbeyond.com/searchSKU.asp?order_num=-1&SSTR=shower+tote&go=1&</a>
5) Soap or body wash
6) Soap container: it’d be best to have a container for it, so the other items in your tote won’t get soppy and sticky. Bed Bath and Beyond has some handy plastic soap cases with latches
7) Shampoo (if preferred, you can pour your shampoo or conditioner in small plastic bottles with flip tops-- see Container Store-- to save space in your shower tote)
8) Conditioner
9) Loofah/sponge or wash towel
10) Shaving lotion or body wash for shaving
11) Shaving razor

GROOMING

Hair
1) Comb or hairbrush
2) Hairbands/hair pins for ladies
3) Hairspray/sculpting cream
4) Hair dryer
5) Curling iron
6) Straightening iron

Face
1) Tweezers
2) Small pair of nosehair scissors (gross, I know, but for any overgrown hairs from your nose)
3) Razor, shaving cream and aftershave for males
4) Acne/cleansing wash and acne cream
5) Cotton facial pads, for applying or removing foundation and other make-up, also for applying facial lotions, toners and astringents
6) Make-up (a lot of more low-maintenance girls I know often just go with the basics-- foundation or tinted moisturizer for covering up flaws, mascara and lip gloss or a lipstick)
7) Facial lotion (especially if you’re in a colder climate and your skin will tend to dry out more easily)

Mouth
1) Lip balm
2) Toothbrush
3) Toothpaste
4) Floss
5) Mouthwash
6) Mints or minty gum
7) Toothbrush case: Bed Bath and Beyond has a great little plastic toothbrush container with a latch, so the bristles of your toothbrush don’t get all gross jumbled next to everything else in your shower tote or caddy

Hands and Feet
1) Nail clippers
2) Nail file
3) Nail polish remover
4) Hand and feet cream (Neutrogena makes the effective and inexpensive Norweigan formula <a href="http://www.neutrogena.com/ProductsDetails_12.asp%5B/url%5D">http://www.neutrogena.com/ProductsDetails_12.asp</a>)</p>

Body
1) Body lotion
2) Deoderant (can’t forget that!)
3) Pefume or cologne, or body sprays

Other
1) Vaseline: the plastic jar with the blue top. It’s oily and sticky, but if you don’t have lotion or lip balm handy, a spot of Vaseline will do it.
2) Q-Tips: tons of uses-- for cleaning the insides of your ears, for applying or removing make-up, etc
3) Cotton balls: like Q-Tips, lots of uses

What's a face towel for?

you guys sure are bring alot of stuff.

i dont see a need for 90% of that stuff up there,.

just out of curiousity, what's the 90%? seems to me that most of the things on that list are pretty useful (if not a necessity).

Seriously, is a face towel for just drying your face alone?

Face towels are just square towels that are about 8.5 inches a side. I don't use them to dry my face-- I use my regular bath towel or a hand towel to dry myself off. A lot of people just use face towels to cleanse or scrub their faces or bodies.

You use it like a loofah. It's just a small little towel you can get wet and clean yourself with, if you don't want to use a bath sponge or loofah or brush etc.

gotcha, okay. that makes sense.

some people call it a washcloth!!! and take it from an oldtimer-- i'd say 90% of those items WILL come in handy

"i'd say 90% of those items WILL come in handy"

Great! I was worried people were not believing that anything I wanted to list for them actually was useful.

Who needs a toothbrush? C'mon now...

Yeah, and dude, razors? Aren't girls just letting it all grow out now-a-days?

:)

Face towels are useful if you have acne medication that can bleach fabrics. That way, you only bleach out your face towel instead of every single one of your bath towels, which are more expensive to replace.
