The Dreadful First Year Comp + Selecting Teachers....

Hey, My thread is basically aiming towards whether I can select my teachers for my first year courses or am I just stuck to the random assortment..?

1.) I hear First Year Comp is a terrible course and when I look on NDToday for reviews, almost ALL the teachers suck and are harsh graders and teach very boring classes. So I was wandering, especially, because there are surprisingly, only 2 or 3 teachers who are rated as the "easiest FYComp teachers" on NDToday and whether if I can tell my advisor sometime in August when I get my course schedule in the mail whether if I can change my schedule to see if there is room for these PARTICULAR 2 or 3 good teachers.

2.)In general, for ALL my courses, if I do not get the teacher I want (at least according to NDToday), can I still try to get the teacher I want by telling my advisor some specific, interesting reason such as "My ND friends have taken this courses from this teacher and have really enjoyed him, so I was wondering if there was any space in his class" you know, instead of saying something silly as "This teacher has the best reviews on NDToday and so I was wondering if I can be in his class.." What do you think, because I really do not want to get bad teachers first year. I am not trying to be some sort of student taking the easiest way out but I want things in my favor especially as I am premed and would like to get the best teachers as far as to grading and getting a high GPA.

Well, of course you shouldn't say it's because of reviews. Definitely ask if any of those specific profs' classes are available, say you've heard good things about them, which is true even though you don't cite the source, and ask. It never hurts to try.

One option is just to start out in the class and see for yourself if it is as bad as people say; sometimes it is and sometimes it isn't. Another option you may want to consider is talking with the teachers or their departments! What usually happens is that the teachers are given extra seats to assign as they will, and if you talk to them, they may give you one of those seats so it is definately worth a shot. If you get in a bad class, however, it may be worthwhile to just try it. If nothing else, you can be like me after my Micro class and just proudly be able to say you survived a certain professor! It will all work out and one class won't hurt your GPA too much, but if you need to drop, you can. If you are stuck, you may as well give it a whirl.

You'll only be able to switch 1 or 2 classes tops. All changes have to be approved by your FYS advisor. I just stuck through my first semester schedule even though I hated it because they picked university requirement courses that I would have to take otherwise (literature seminar, intro to theatre, intro to philo, intro to theology, and the best social science class regardless of professor -- social psychology)

suprisingly, i actually liked first year comp this year ( i hated english in HS).. i had prof orlijan and it was a really chill/easy class and i believe i did become a better writer. once it got warmer at the end of the year, we started having our classes outside.
