The Ec list on the Common Application form seems quite restrictive. For example, Won't it be insufficient to just state School magazine, grade 10-12, editor in chief? So I am wondering if anyone knows if I should exaggerate the position part on the form by describing the roles and purpose of the club, or alternatively, attach a resume as an appendix? Thankx alotz.

Don't exaggerate the position. You could attach a resume if you think its really worth it. What I'm curious about is how they won't be able to grasp what that EC entails. Editor-in-chief pretty much conveys all it needs to convey. If that is insufficient, write about it in a personal statement if it really matters to you.

Instead of trying to get ahead by lying -- something that's likely to cause colleges to reject you -- why not get ahead legitimately by expanding your positions by initiating and following through with some good projects.

That's usually easy to do because the majority of people who have offices in h.s. (and often even in adult situations) aren't willing to do much real work. Consequently, a person who has ideas and is willing to do the hard work of organizing those ideas is likely to be able to run with their ideas.

Then, you could put something impressive on your application --and it also would be true, and backed up by recommendations from your advisor, GC, etc.

Heck, as an editor in chief, if you took full advantage of all of the possibilities of that position, you'd amass an impressive activities list and some great experience!

is it a bad idea to expand on each activity in the additional comments area? or is that for special circumstances or something?

yeah, i see a problem with the restrictive nature of the app. Say someone played jv basketball for 3 years, and the school (like mine) forces coaches to put seniors on the varsity team, there would not be enough room to explain this. Students can just say they were varsity for 4 years.

What can I do if my ECs list is longer than the space given in the Common App?

loser, it says right on the common app: If you need more space, please use the "Additional Information" section on the bottom of page 4.
