The Economist: Foreign students - Train ’em up. Kick ’em out

“America, by contrast, is horribly complacent. In absolute terms, it attracts the most foreign students, thanks to its size, its outstanding universities and the lure of Silicon Valley and other brainworking hotspots. But it punches far below its weight: only 5% of the students on its campuses are foreign. Its visa rules are needlessly strict and stress keeping out terrorists rather than wooing talent.”

I find this interesting. As someone whose cousins are now coming to America to study abroad, I can verify that the work situation is somewhat true. It can be difficult to find work. What I have seen is that a lot people get degrees from America and then go home to their respective countries. Because American universities are highly regarded outside the US, these students often get well paying jobs.

Sigh, another non-nuanced opinion piece by the Economist.

Their comparative statistics are misleading. A fairer comparison (excluding community colleges, which aren’t classified as universities in most countries, and part-time students, which compromise a disproportionally large percentage of total college enrollment) would yield 10% foreign students in the US, on par with their numbers for Canada and Britain.

I would love to hear which visa rules they consider needlessly strict and aimed at keeping out terrorists. The two major hurdles to a student visa are (1) proof of sufficient funding and (2) projecting non-immigration intent. For work visas, the two main hurdles are (1) a qualified job offer and (2) the visa cap. All of those provisions look to me like an attempt to protect the American economy from an influx of cheap labor, not from terrorists…?

It is super easy to work for “a year or two” after graduation. That’s the purpose of OPT.

I would love to hear a nuanced case for unlimited entry for university-educated immigrants. Too bad that they don’t provide any supporting argument at all.

With the situation of the world’s economy, jobs aren’t easy to get regardless of citizenship or location. ^^
