I am in high school now and want to make my resume stronger. I stumbled upon competition for singers called the Featured. Has anyone heard anything about that competition? Will participating and hopefully winning that competition add up to my resume?
Here is there website www.thefeaturedny.com
I have a good friend who lives in NYC. Her daughter is a vocalist who does a lot of these types of competitions. I’ll ask her.
This is clearly a new competition. The Facebook page seems to start last year. So it is not well-established.
There are competitions that charge fees to apply and promise things as prizes (often Carnegie Hall) but this promises roles with West End Forward Productions NY, which I cannot find online. I did find West End Productions. This seems like a good way to raise money: one wonders why they cannot just hold auditions. Don’t get me wrong: I don’t know anything. I suggest you look into West End Forward Productions to check the FEATured competition out.
I looked up the judges. Kathryn Day has been singing opera since the 1970’s. Not sure about the others but they look commercial so the judges are a bit of a hodge podge in my view.
The money prizes look questionable: Most Charming? Most Expressive? Really?
I am not a voice parent but I would be leery of this. As I have written before, as a parent of a musician and dancer, I am not a fan of competitions anyway. I think your “resume” is better built with hard work on development with a teacher, real training, and performances that are not competitions but happen as a result of your studies.
This “competition” looks like a money-making event for the person running it and a scam for those that enter. The fees are exorbitant- more than even the highest level YAP- and can assure you that the fees charged for an accompanist are not going to the person on the piano- they are far higher than the going rate.
Save your money and put it into lessons with a good, reputable teacher.
Just to clarify: my comment that it seemed to be a “good way to raise money” was sarcastic and meant that the competition seemed to be a money- maker as MezziosMama wisely describes. She is obviously experienced with VP.
@compmom - I got the sarcasm! Just figured I’d go lay it all out there.
