hehe IIT thank you for rubbing that one in...I should be engrossed in working out that particularly engrossing differential equation now...the exam is in 8 days

sorry once again... if it makes you feel any better i was rejected from freakin governor's school :( and iit was in response to semipertn about the quality of rejectees...

uhhh we ARE talking about the same IIT aren't we???

Indian Institue of Technology

I dunno the path of this thread has me confused

yeah that's the one I am talking about :(

writing the exam is more depressing than any rejection I get from any college abroad. seriously. there are people who have been banking their lives on making it and who have effectively given up 4 years of their lives studying for it. What happens to them if they don't make it? And very very few make it. The suicide rate in the country spikes after we write those exams and it is seriously demoralizing...I wouldn't complain if I got in though :)

the thread is not taking any path...it is a LOUNGE for God's sake! It is meant to be as aimless as I am :)

Most of them(or is it us now, after MIT and Pton reject me) know all through they dont stand a chance, that its all a matter of luck, and that BITS, NITs, VIT, and soon still exist. The dream of going to IIT is not like that of going to MIT or Pton - going to IIT is not dreamt of, it is forced by external factors only.

Its even more pathetic when board exam results come out - people believe they can clear those, but only hope they can clear the JEE. In fact, i dont really think a whole bunch of people kill themselves because they failed to clear the JEE.

Noone will.....

IIT sounds like a caltech amongst caltechs, just wondering here?

are most students in india math science focused or are there humanities majors or social sciences majors?

It has seemed to me (at least from this board) that a lot of indian students are interested in math or science.

They exist, but generally only those with inferior intelligence are expected to take those majors.
According to what Indian Society dictates, the intelligence of the student depneds on the major he takes -

BTech=MBBS>BE>BSc>commerce stuff>BA

MBBS is medicine
BTech is basically BSE, BSc is basically BS, BE is somewhere between them, and is generally the same as BTech.

Note that noone gives a **** what subject you do these in

cool, you're from Hyderabad, I remember reading a National Geographic article where it talked about the successful growth of that city. all the way from efficient tax collection to city beautification. It is a role model for cities in the developing world!

can u tell that I'm interested in the politics of Urban Studies?

For some strange reason humanities and social Sciences majors are sneered at and looked down on as those people who didnt make it in science- atleast in my city they are. Because of this social conditioning, you don't get too many bright people who want to major in these things despite their innate abilities.
Also we have a subject streaming system in most schools in India which means by the end of Grade 10 you choose your streams (Science, Humanities+Social Sciences and Commerce) and drop all subjects from the other streams. No prizes for guessing which streams waiting list is the longest :-/
My mom and dad are both history professors and barring very very few bright and motivated students, the greater part of the people attending their classes are unscintillating to say the least

People in India are obsessed with engineering and medicine- not even pure science and pure math. My relatives are horrified when they hear that I want to study either Physics or English...this is anathema(sp?) for the typical Indian middle class family. My parents are supportive of my decisions though so that helps :)

Kinda....

However, if youve seen recent articles on Hyderabad development, you'd know that since a change in the state government came over almost all development programes have been cancelled or stalled. All the new government does is rename old, failed programs of over 9 years ago, or the more successful programs of the previous regime. The new government is instead focussing on deceiving the electorate, backing down from election promises, and killing (yes, i mean it physiologically) opposition workers and leaders - the guys who ran the last government.

Yours is not the only city. I havent heard of ANY city which believes otherwise in the Indian Subcontinent yet

Thats the ONLY reason im applying to Pton

ha....luckily armenia isnt totally like that (English is a favorite subject cause its needed to get a job there)

Yeah me too...I want to get away from the accusatory looks that my Physics teacher gave me when I said I didn't want to become an engineer. She has told me repeatedly that there is just no future in Physics and that my abilities would be put to better use in engineering

My Bio teacher started hating me the day I said I was sure I didnt want to study medicine. She has tried to get me to quit her class every single day in the past two years. I've stuck it out though partly out of genuine interest in the subject and partly because I enjoy seeing the look on her face when she sees me at the front of the class :p

Basically people in India are only interested in professional course. Doesnt help that the only professional course I am really interested in is Law and even that is a kind of second choice.
Even some of my friends say stuff like 'History is for losers' and 'Only idiots have to end up studying Philosophy or Political Science'

It is deeply frustrating.

what did ghandi study?

I presume you mean Gandhi.

He studied law

oh yes...the Mahatma himself

1990th post...

Gandhi was a long time ago. Things dont make any sense here anymore. Oh, and english is a very required subject here as well - you cant live a decent life without knowing english. Its just that english is always secondary - noone majors in it.

And Such, i havent bothered to tell any of my teachers im not planning to go for engineering - i think ill take MSc even if i end up goin to the IIT. I know exactly what they'll say and I have no intention of opening a can of worms

Well I dont know..everyone I know tells me I am suited for humanities, but whenever I do an aptitude test,it tell me Im best suited for engineering ,business or law. Also, the funny fact is that though I hate Physics with a passion,I find a strange sense of elation after solving a problem.
