The first meeting of Procrastinators' Anonymous has been called to order.

OK, how many people here haven't started their essays yet? Be honest.

Is it because of nerves, a lack of motivation, or a lack of inspiration? For me, it's all three.

Just to get the creative juices flowing, what are some of the WORST essay topics you've ever heard of being written? Also, although we all know adcoms want to get to know you, when do application essays get TOO personal?

Woo, I'm bored!

I started my essays for UC application but my common app was lost after i saved a file over it. =D Oh well, i have to meet up with my admissions consultant and start over. Bleh I'd like to walk in with a rough but i'd probably start from scratch.

Don't worry about essays, you still have plenty of time [even if you're doing ED], I know I didn't get my essay working till about post-Thanksgiving so don't feel so pressured. Also, motivation will come in time [just hopefully not too late] because I find the best time to write an essay is when you feel ready, not when you make yourself ready.

As to worst essay topic, well not worst but too crazy was of one student who felt like he was a cockroach stuck in a toilet bowl and that the idea of being flushed and going in circles is a metaphor for his life going round and round but never getting anywhere, so yeah great idea, but too much going on.

As to too personal, anything overly romantic [mellodramatic relationships], suicides, other people's embarassment, and death [if taken too far, though can made into a good essay], and so on. Really this is a personal call, and if you think TMI is the first thing that runs through your mind after reading an essay than probably it's not best.

I haven't started at all. :( :( :(

I don't get why people feel the need to start so early. How long does it honestly take to write an essay and get it edited? 4 months? No offense to the people that do, I just don't think people should feel like they're procrastinating if they haven't started over the summer.

Two questions on the essays:

If you're using the common application for most of your schools, do you really have to write a different essay for each school? Or can you just copy and paste your essay info each application?

Hypothetical situation: Say you really, really love a certain school (your heart pounds when you think about it, your knees melt as soon as you step on campus, yadda yadda), and are overjoyed when it finally sends you it's REAL application. However, after reading it's essay topics, you discover that you hate them. Would it hurt you in any way to fall back on using the common app instead of the application that the school was wonderful enough to send you?

Haha, whoever creaed this topic and thought of such a provocative title really deserves a pat on the back :D

Btw, Acrylicz- we're in the same boat. I procastinate too badly, and thus haven't started writing any type of essay. In fact, the reason for this procastination is I'm quite hard-up for ideas and inspiration for essays. Just hope what Tonyt88 said will apply to me: ideas will come along as time progresses :)

You can send the same common app personal essay to each school, but you may have to write seperate essays for schools that have a Common App supplement.

If the school accepts the common app, then you can definitely use it. Part of the Common App agreement is that the schools will consider the two applications equally. If you send in the common app and the school supplement, it's technically no different than using the schools app (though some universities "strongly recommend" answering the university-app essay questions because they allow the admissions officer to get a better impression of you)

Why thank you, Pygmalion. I aim to please.:D

This statement actually holds a lot of truth. I wrote an essay during the night after I had a very weird dream. (I don't want to go into too much trouble, but it had to do with super-intelligent chimps)

I have not started on my essays. Yeppie!!! I've started filling out those hefty applications though....by hand. I just like my penmanship.

Who in the world starts essays during the summer…. Please…..

I was waiting for this thread :)

:'( Apps aren't hard to fill out. Just the essays, right? Because I think I can list my address and SSS # while sleeping. Also choosing which ECs to present shouldn't be as tough as writing essays.

School didn't even start yet

Good point, grnjd. But this IS the CC board we're talking about here...

I haven't even started....lack of inspiration. I keep looking at the commonapp topics and I'm like..."ugh, this is going to be one of those SAT essay thingies..."

I did fill out the common application though...well, most of it, and I started on my U of M application and I'm about to start my UVa application RIGHT NOW.

Haha, yeah. I still haven't started on ANY applications. Oopsie.

i dunno. for me i work best when i'm under a lot of pressure. (usually meaning the night before things are due)

Besides UIUC (early rolling) and MIT (EA), I didn't do the other 5 applications until the week before January 1st (and 6th for Olin). I think people get a little too worked up over applications on here.
