The First Two Essays...

I'm having the greatest difficulty with approaching these two essays. I'm finding that it's hard to really do this without laundry-listing, and laundry-listing is not only the worst way to write an essay, but it also makes addressing all of the questions in Essay 2 rather complicated.

I guess, if I'm going to be asking one single question through this post to any Gates veterans, it's this: How do I tackle Essay 2 (subjects in which you had difficulty + why + how)? The essay asks for so much junk that's it's rather difficult to me to get very specific.

I would say focus on one or two subjects and go in depth about why you struggle (is it because you can’t visualize the math? Or because you grew up in a not-English speaking household so grammar is tough? etc) and then show improvement and that you worked through the problems instead of just letting the problems plague you.

Hmm, so it wouldn’t be too horrible with focusing on just one subject? I just really hate how…demanding the question is. A question about a subject you’ve had difficulty in is hard enough to answer, especially since the use of the word “subjects” makes it sound like it’s asking for academics, and I’m a 4.0 unweighted kind of student.

Then…say something along the lines of your worst subject (there has to be one that you relatively had a worse time in than others) and say how despite that you still managed a 4.0 UW GPA.

Thanks NYSP2010, you were of great help through my application process. Btw, go Cal!

Yeah, GO BEARS! :)
