The four tiers

What are the first, second, third and fourth tier boarding schools?

Anybody?? Hello…

There is no official definition.

It’s debatable which schools are best and partially it is based on personal fit. A school that is good fit for one student is not necessarily right for another student.

Ya, but still you can say that some specifically are superior in reputation, academics, endowment, and particularly college matriculation. I’d go with:
1)Andover, Exeter, St Paul’s
1.5) Lawrenceville, Hotchkiss, Groton (maybe could go up), Milton, Choate
2)Middlesex, St Andrew’s, St Mark’s, St George’s
3)Masters, Suffield, Kings
4)???
Clearly, there are a lot more than just those, but they give a general idea. Also, this list is entirely mine, but substantially based upon my knowledge of matriculation from www.matriculationstats.org, as well as acceptance rates, endowment, and people I know who go to/will be going to all of these.

1)hades
2)gladchemms
3)loomis,nmh,proctor,suffield,ect…
4)masters,willinston,kings,ect…

@yankeefan1234, isn’t HADES part of the acronym for GLADCHEMMS?

Yes, but the schools that aren’t hades that are in gladchemms, thats what i meant

Okay, I should know better than to wade into this, but the “tier” stuff makes me so mad I can’t see straight. I’m not mad at anyone who gets invested in it–I think humans are compelled to make lists to see how they measure up. My problem is with what we’re measuring. There are around 300 boarding schools in the US. 300. You are listing schools that rank in the TOP 10 out of 300 as “Tier 2.” At least one of your “Tier 4” schools (Masters) is arguably in the top 30 (using arbitrary statistics like SAT scores and SSAT scores) Also, I should confess that as a person I’m more interested in including than excluding. I look at all these boarding schools with incredible facilities and caring, brilliant faculty members, and I think there are easily 30 or 40 schools I’d put in Tier 1 when I look not only at all 300 boarding schools, but to the bigger picutre of what high schools in the US can offer.

If you want to make minute distinctions between a very small number of New England schools, then I’d label what the list is about: “Minor Statistical Differences Among the Best of the Best in the North East.” And yes, I agree that that isn’t as catchy as “4 Tiers.” But there aren’t 4 distinct tiers in boarding schools. That’s a made-up concept. It doesn’t mean it isn’t fun to argue with your friends about which school is better or worse, but sometimes it’s more fun to welcome people in rather than shut them out.

I guess my problem is that I can’t stop worrying about those kids out there who are very bright and who have gotten into amazing schools, only to come here and read that the school they love and worked hard to get into is considered “second or third tier” by someone who only visited briefly or read a bunch of statistics. I’m probably being silly. Those kids may have a stronger sense of self-worth than I’m giving them credit for. They certainly are smart enough to look at a list like this and quickly assess that the point of this is just for fun.

Sorry for the rant. Continue to have fun with this.

I am not trying to hurt anyones feelings, and I will be attending northfield next year which is argurably a tier 2 or 3 school, and I do not care about its ranking because the campus and people are amazing. Where as, I was just trying to show what schools were considered better based on acceptance rate, academically known.

It’s all good, Yankee! The only difference is that I would argue that NMH is a Tier 1 school, because I don’t think acceptance rate tells me anything about a school’s worth other than that a ton of people apply to it. All the NMH grads I know are every bit as smart and capable as the SPS grad I know.

Like I said before, some people have fun with this stuff. We’ll just have to disagree, and I’ll continue to think of you as going to a top tier school. Hope that’s okay with you! ;)

hahaha fine by me… we will agree to disagree ;)
