The Gatekeepers

I have lately discovered an outstanding book called "The Gatekeepers", by Jacques Steinberg, and would like to recommend it to the high school students in CC.

The title itself refers to the well-known 'Adcoms' as being the keepers of the key to college admission. The book depicts several stories of actual high school students who applied to different colleges - and how they did it (essays, scores, gpa, etc.) - as well as comments made by the author, a former admissions officer of a prestigious college.

I am convinced the reading of this work can give any college applicant a wider and deeper view of the application process as a whole, and hope this recommendation will be helpful to the prospective college students here in CC.

Best wishes!

I second the recommendation.

I read it…I’m furious that they hire incompetent people like Ralph to make admissions decisions. Maybe if they paid more than a 30k annual salary to admission officers then more qualified people would be hired. This book will make you lose the shred of faith that you have left of humanity after 4 years of hs. Overall an interesting read about the lies and deceit that schools go through to buffer their rep and increase their funding.
